Press release from: Air Berlin

Mr. Joachim Hunold's offer to step down as the company's CEO as per 1 September 2011 was accepted today by the Board of Directors of Air Berlin PLC with great respect.

Mr. Hartmut Mehdorn, who has been a member of the Board of Air Berlin PLC since 1 July 2009, will assume the position as CEO for an interim period.

Mr. Joachim Hunold will remain bound to the company as a Non-Executive Director.

In a statement, the Board explained: "With these measures, the prerequisites that airberlin needs for a swift and comprehensive adaptation to the changed market environment are present. The Board would like to thank Joachim Hunold for his long-standing involvement at the helm of airberlin. Without Mr. Hunold's consistent efforts directed to long-term results, airberlin would not have become Germany's second-largest and Europe's sixth-largest airline company. In this manner, the framework for a sustainable profitability of the company is provided."

airberlin is Germany’s second largest airline. The company currently has over 8,900 employees. In 2010 alone airberlin received more than 10 awards for service and quality. The fleet encompasses 170 aircraft with an average age of five years. Consequently airberlin operates one of the youngest fleets in Europe. The airline’s modern aircraft are extremely fuel-efficient and so provide a lasting contribution to the reduction of aviation emissions. airberlin is one of the major airlines in Europe and flies to 163 destinations in 39 countries. In 2010 the airline carried 33.6 million passengers. airberlin has now signed a declaration which will allow the airline to join oneworld®, the worldwide aviation alliance. Full membership is planned for the start of 2012. airberlin offers codeshare flights with oneworld members American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia and S7.
