Press release from: Other Edition

Fantom Magazine is published in Milan and is edited by editors Cay Sophie Rabinowitz and Selva Barni, based in New York and Milan respectively. Fantom magazine is a quarterly photographic magazine that profiles some of the most fascinating contributions from the international photography scene. Its focus is primarily on art photography and visual artists who use photography. But, it’s certainly not limited to that. The experimentation of chemical and light in all its forms is covered. But certainly Fantom magazine is not one of those magazines in which articles are limited to momentary summaries to stunning designs of pictures. The lengthy layouts are there, but so are the words. Eschewing gossipy celebrity-driven articles in favor of serious but appealing texts by esteemed writers and critics – they really are a bit like journal essays without the dryness- Fantom contextualizes its content with forceful writing that assumes the audience is smart enough to do without demeaning explanation and would rather get to the heart of the matter. It promises a much-needed asset for those interested in the cusp at a time when the distinctions between ‘art’, ‘photography’ and ‘commercial’ have become outmoded.
The sixth issue of Fantom magazine is now available on other edition newsstand along with many other digital magazines. The magazine has rapidly proven itself as an important voice in the field of modern photographic art and issue number six sees it sailing forth with delight. Jordan Hruska’s article on Arthur Tress immediately demands attention. Accompanied by a splendid array of Tress’ unforgettable black and white abstracted images, Hruska’s commentary in the form of the article ‘Camera Consciousness’ is an intelligent insight into Tress’ 1960’s offerings that bring a certain abstract naturalism to the practice entirely in keeping with the spirit of the times. Also immediately appealing is Giorgio Barrera’s interview with Joel Meyerowitz whose street photography of New York in the 1960’s and 1970’s has merged with the popular memory of a particular time and place.
