JMA Pilani FDP on Adolescence Happiness Early Childhood Education & Effective Teaching Methodologies

No one has doubt that Education can be transformed only by educating the educator, and not merely by creating a new pattern, a new system of action, etc.

Smt. Every Amar Akbar Antony in India today talks about Right to Education RTE but forgets that the right to education means the right to quality education which, in turn, implies the right to quality teachers. Quality teacher does not mean qualified teacher but also those who have the characteristics: knowledge, skills, right attitude and passion.

Keeping the above in mind, JMA Pilani focuses on human resource improvement for its teachers by conducting Faculty Development Programs – FDP on a regular basis. In 2018 Prof BR Natarajan from Banasthali conducted FDP focusing on Soft Skills for Teachers and also administered a test for measuring personality of teachers as well as their teaching perspective inventory. In addition every year experts from Oxford University Press India conduct various Teacher Quality Enhancement Workshops at JMA Pilani.

For the year 2019, Prof BR Natarajan from Banasthali on 21 Jun 2019 conducted a workshop on Adolescence and Social behavior of Teenagers as well as Optimizing Happiness. The adolescence session included stages of adolescence; key issues that can have an impact on a teen's social development such as self esteem, peer pressure, tobacco, drugs and alcohol; teens and sex; fads like tattoos and piercings; depression and suicide; 5 Steps for Negotiating Tough Students based on the Behavioral Change Stairway Model developed by the USA Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI’s hostage negotiation unit; 7 Keys for Handling Difficult Teenagers; strategies to keep students attentive during class and Bollywood movies which depict the Teenage Emotions and Aspirations.

The Happiness session included “Savor Thank Aspire Give Empathize” S.T.A.G.E. framework which helps to build five key happiness skills, happy Chemicals DOSE ‘Dopamine Oxytocin, Serotonin, Endorphin”; Happiness formula; Five Ways to Boost DOSE and conducted a quiz on measuring happiness score.

CBSE master trainer and resource person Mr Rajan Kumar who is presently teaching in the department of English for over a decade at century old Birla School Pilani has trained more than 500 educators from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. His domain of expertise includes Challenging areas in English Class X and XII, Classroom Management and Value Education. He is recipient of Guru Shikshak Award 2018 from Dainik Bhaskar Group for his contribution in the field of education. On Basant Panchami 2019 which is observed as Founders Day for various Birla educational institutions in Pilani, Rajan Kumar received Best Teacher Award by Birla Education Trust. Rajan Kumar on 22 Jun 2019 conducted a session on Effective Teaching Methodologies and how to make teaching and learning joyful both for the teacher and learner.

JMA Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan also conducted a session on Innovative Teaching Strategies for 2tst Century kids and the Role of Pre School Teachers covering emerging issues in early childhood education and urged the teachers to gear up for the new challenges. The teachers of JMA who attended the FDP left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a shining jewel in the crown among the schools at Pilani
