Capturing Chinese Presents a New Advanced Chinese Reader -- Lu Xun’s The Real Story of Ah Q

In an interview with The China Beat, Nadolny said, “textbook lessons are great and necessary for beginning and intermediate students, but reading original literature is the cornerstone of becoming an advanced student.” To help Chinese language learners read Chinese literature is the main reason why Capturing Chinese books are set in an improvised format that involves notable Chinese literary works.
Kevin Nadolny learned Chinese through the daunting, textbook-based type of learning. “I was yearning to break away from my textbook lessons that we read in class every morning. However, my Chinese was not yet good enough to handle Chinese fiction on my own (without a lot of struggle anyway). I would look up 10 to 20 characters on each page of the books that I bought and wrote copious notes. Looking up characters by radical is tedious and my dictionary showed the strains of being very well used.” Nadolny attended schools both in the U.S. and Beijing. He mastered Mandarin Chinese in eight years.

Lu Xun, canonized by the Communist Party as the father of modern Chinese literature, is one of China’s most important literary figures. Lu Xun has written his works in the midst of political turmoil. He grew up seeing the transformation of imperial China to the Republic of China. Reading his works is like a short visit to this period of China’s history.

Capturing Chinese: The Real Story of Ah Q presents the original Chinese in simplified characters with corresponding pinyin, footnotes, and illustrations. The footnotes list most difficult words, phrases, places, and names found in the Chinese text so that readers don’t have to constantly consult their dictionaries. Pinyin is included at the end of each chapter. The “answer key” to the pronunciation is available, but is not distracting. Free Chinese audio files are included with the book and feature two native speakers, one female and one male, reading the entire story. Illustrations are also included and bring the story to life.
