AMERICAN AIRLINES EXECUTIVE BONUSES OUTRAGE FORMER TWA ATTENDANTS
St. Louis - The furloughed employees of the former Trans World Airlines that were absorbed into American Airlines following the TWA purchase and ultimately laid off following the 9/11 attacks are shocked and reeling with disgust as American Airlines is set to pay out $200M in bonuses mid-April to approximately 800 American Airlines executives. When American purchased TWA in 2001, TWA flight attendants were promised equitable seniority integration but after Congressional approval of the TWA purchase they were ultimately forced to the bottom of the seniority list and laid off as direct result of 9/11, even though the airline received approximately $840M in government aid.
“The three major unions at American Airlines have made huge concessions over the last five years to keep the airline out of bankruptcy and no one knows more than the former TWA flight attendants, - we have given 100% in concessions” states Roger Graham an 18-year veteran of the airline. The former TWA flight attendants are currently pleading with American Airlines to extend their recall rights, which started to expire last October, resulting in their termination of many and will systematically continue through July of 2008, when American Airlines can began re-hiring flight attendants for nearly 50% less wages. Under a current agreement, American has the right to not recall these flight attendants after a period of five years.
Graham stated “ Its unconscionable to think that American Airlines is ready to pay out $200M+ in management bonuses this April when not one former TWA flight attendant is working and being terminated as their five year recall rights expire.“ He goes on to say “Only 5% of those bonus monies would extend the recall rights of these un-spoken victims of 9/11."
The amount of bonuses set to be paid out is approximately the same amount of money that American Airlines has earned in profit, since 2000.
