SLAY JOINS COALITION OF MISSOURI MAYORS URGING AMERICAN AIRLINES TO EXTEND RECALL

Press release from: AFFA

St. Louis, MO – The last five years have been very difficult for the former TWA flight attendants but now their plight is drawing congressional and mayoral attention - their wings haven’t been clipped just yet.

When American Airlines purchased TWA in 2001, TWA flight attendants were promised equitable seniority integration but upon arriving at American, found themselves at the bottom of the seniority list and were ultimately furloughed because of the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Under a current agreement, American has the right to not recall these flight attendants after a period of five years. This means that as soon as the last of the furloughed TWA flight attendants is erased from the system, company management can begin hiring new flight attendants for much less pay. The first round of recall rights expired last October and will systematically continue until all of these flight attendants are eliminated in July 2008.

This week another high profile politician lent his support. St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay joins the mayors of Kansas City and St. Ann, as well as Senator Claire McCaskill, in urging Gerard Arpey CEO of American Airlines to extend the recall rights of those former TWA employees that were furloughed as a direct result of 9/11.

Mayor Slay drafted a letter, March 12, to American Airlines CEO Gerard Arpey, urging the airline to extend the recall rights of the former TWA flight attendants who were furloughed due to 9/11. He states “While the decision to place the former TWA flight attendants at the bottom of the seniority list was not the airline’s decision, extending their recall rights would seem to be a reasonable way to address their situation. He goes on to say “For the good of the company and out of fairness, I respectfully ask that American Airlines engage the Association of Professional Flight Attendants to sit down to address the issue of recall rights.

Mayor Cafazza of St. Ann wrote Mr. Arpey as well and stated, “It is quite disheartening that some of the tax dollars in post 9/11 aid to your airline were not afforded to extend the recall rights of those unspoken victims of 9/11. By extending the recall rights of these furloughed employees you will have taken one more step in fighting terrorism.

Kay Barnes, Mayor of Kansas City has also expressed her support for the extension of recall rights, in a letter dated March 1. She writes “As a former base for TWA, Kansas City, Missouri residents and the local economy were directly impacted by the American Airlines purchase of TWA in April 2001. Many former flight attendants reside in Kansas City and I urge you to extend the recall rights of these dedicated and experienced employees, including a retroactive extension for the flight attendants whose five years have already expired.

”Most notably they enlisted the assistance of Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO). The former TWA flight attendants vigorously campaigned for the Senator immediately following the senatorial debate last October. Roger Graham an 18-year veteran of TWA stated “We worked our tails off at that debate to have our issue addressed and Senator McCaskill’s correct answer and sincerity brought her the Missouri TWA votes. A few weeks later, Senator McCaskill sent a letter of address to the former TWA flight attendants, in which she, states “I plan to pursue direct involvement” on the issue and “investigate the possibility of legislation to correct this injustice”. Recently, she told a Congressional Hearing into airline consolidation “I have a great deal of angst over what has happened to the former TWA employees.”

Graham stated “ Its unconscionable that American Airlines is ready to pay out $200M in management bonuses this April at the expense of these furloughed employees – the unspoken victims of 9/11.
