Wolfe’s Neck Farm Springs into Action with the Annual Spring Gala Dinner and Auction
Every spring the Wolfe’s Neck Farm Spring Gala and Auction is held as a major fundraising event supporting the organization’s mission. This year the Gala will be held Saturday, May 7th at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport from 5:30–10:00pm. The theme for the Gala is “Preserving the Past – Cultivating the Future.” The lead sponsor for the event is Bath Savings Institution and Bath Savings Trust Company. The evening will feature a silent auction, a four-course dinner featuring locally-grown foods, and a live auction.
Auction items at this year’s Gala include trips to Tuscany, an Idaho fishing lodge, and a wildlife safari adventure in South Africa. Works of art have been donated to the cause by local artists including Carolyn Walton, Alice Ingraham, Carol Bass and John Orcutt. Also featured this year will be new offerings from the Wolfe’s Neck Farm itself, such as natural, pasture-raised turkeys that will be available for Thanksgiving.
This year’s auctioneer is the notable and irrepressible Kathy Kingston, CAI, BAS, who is widely recognized as an auctioneer entertaining enough to be a performer on stage and effective enough to raise the money that the organization hopes for.
Betsy Roper, Chairperson for the Gala reports, “We have so much wonderful support from the community, from donors and from people buying tickets to attend; that we are excited and confident that we can meet or exceed our goals.” Some tickets are still available. Please call the Farm at 865-4469 or visit WNFGala.org for additional information.
The money raised at the Gala supports the mission of Wolfe’s Neck Farm Foundation; to develop and demonstrate best practices in sustainable agriculture and environmentally-friendly living while protecting a gift of 626 acres in Freeport - a coastal gem of land and historic buildings. This March, the nonprofit organization was recognized for its efforts by ecoMaine, which presented the Farm with its “Award for eco-Excellence” for the Freeport area. Drawing on its rural heritage, Wolfe’s Neck Farm has developed a wide range of community programs including the Community Garden, Wolfe’s Neck Summer Day Camp, Farm School and a new 4-H program for teens with an interest in raising beef cattle. The Farm also provides coastal camping at its Recompence Shore Campground, which won the award for “Best Coastal Camping 2010” from Yankee Magazine.
Following the Gala, the Wolfe’s Neck summer season offers more events open to the public including the Spring Festival May 14th from 10:00am-2:00pm, a day of fun and rural activities for children and families at the Farm. On June 18th the Farm will host its annual Art Fest, with over 50 New England artists and artisans, displaying their works for pleasure and for purchase. The Art Fest will also feature a Plein Air event and silent auction, featuring works of art painted at the Farm by eight local artists.
Wolfe’s Neck farm is committed to providing a leadership role in agriculture and environmental best practices for today and for the future. For a year-round calendar of events and membership information, visit WolfesNeckFarm.org. The Farm is open to the public every day, free to the public, for visits to see the farm animals and to hike the extensive network of trails through the woods and along the shore.
