Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature Australian artist, Alison-Jane Rice, in Out from Down Under & Beyond: Fine Art from Australia and New Zealand. The exhibition is scheduled to run from May 12, 2011 through June 1, 2011 (opening reception: Thursday, May 12, 2011).

About the Artist
Alison-Jane Rice’s approach to drawing and painting involves a wide array of media, including watercolor, pastel, pencil, charcoal, oil and acrylic on canvas and handmade papers. Blossoming, blooming, creeping limbs and pearlescent seashells radiate out of the composition to cover, shield, swallow or melt into Rice’s enchantingly fluorescent female nudes. Watercolor, she says, “Is an immediate fluid channel for my emotions.” Her art revolves around an interest in the flora, fauna and landscape of her homeland, New South Wales, and the rich culture of indigenous mythology surrounding it. Fluid, maternal and seeped in spiritual prose, Rice produces work expressing her intuitive response to nature and the “physical sensations of the earth.”

Alison-Jane Rice, born in 1958 in Mosman, New South Wales, Australia, received her Masters in Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong. An activist as well as an artist, she received the World Health Organization Healthy Cities Award for contributions to Youth, Arts and Environment in 1994.
