Three insurance companies in Thailand to provide online travel insurance for foreign tourists

Bangkok, 5 April 2019 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently announced the continuation of the “Thailand Travel Shield” project to provide online travel insurance for foreign tourists.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said TAT had initiated the creation of the Thailand Travel Shield project as an alternative insurance scheme in July 2014, in partnerships with reputable, publicly-listed insurance companies in Thailand.

“This year marks the fifth anniversary of our travel insurance initiative to ensure that travellers enjoy the utmost travel experience during their visit to Thailand. The project forms part of a concerted effort by the Thai government, our team at TAT, relevant authorities and the private sector to ensure the safety and security of both tourists and residents,” Mr. Yuthasak added.

The announcement for the continuation of the five-year Thailand Travel Shield project was made at a press conference in Bangkok on 2 April, 2019 (above photo). At the event, Mr. Yuthasak (2nd from left) also represented TAT in signing a memorandum of understanding with management executives of the three insurance companies; namely Mr. Chotiphat Peechanon, President of Southeast Insurance (left); Mr. Bordin Chiaphaibool, Executive Vice President of Muang Thai Insurance (2nd from right), and Mr. Kerati Panichewa, Executive Director of Krungthai Panich Insurance (right).

Travellers planning a trip to Thailand can continue to buy the Thailand Travel Shield’s insurance coverage online at http://thailandtravelshield.tourismthailand.org/. Available in English and Chinese, the platform allows several payment methods including credit card, debit card, Union Pay and AliPay, with the insurance policy being sent instantly to the insured via email.

Visitors availing of the Thailand Travel Shield insurance scheme will be covered once they pass through the immigration until they leave the kingdom. In case of emergency, they can take advantage of the 24-hour emergency assistance by Allianz Global Assistance with staff who are able to speak 40 languages plus an access to more than 300 hospitals across Thailand.

These travel insurance policies provide instant coverage up to the value of one million Baht for the packages starting at 400 Baht for 1-7 days, and up to the value of two million Baht for the packages starting at 950 Baht. The period of coverage ranges up to 60 days, but it can also cover visitors making annual trips to Thailand.

The coverage per trip includes loss of life, dismemberment (hand/foot), loss of sight or total permanent disability during the trip from accident; medical expenses from accident and sickness; trip cancellation; trip curtailment; hijacking; travel delay (more than six hours); loss or damage of baggage and personal effect; baggage delay; personal liability, and travel assistance service.
