Project NMP-REG: Looking back on a successful cooperation

Phase I of the Interreg Europe project NMP-REG ends on March 31, 2019. Good reason for drawing a summary of an intensive and successful cooperation with partners from other European regions and stakeholders from North Rhine-Westphalia after a three years period.

Therefore, the cluster NMWP.NRW invited to the information event „Erfolgreich in den Schlüsseltechnologien“ (Being successful in Key Enabling Technologies), which took place in Duesseldorf on March 26, 2019. The event was, at the same time, the Final Dissemination Event of the project NMP-REG at the end of Phase I. 20 participants from industry, science and policy attended the meeting.

Besides NMP-REG, two further Interreg Europe projects took the opportunity to inform about their objectives and activities: i) project STEPHANIE (Space TEchnology with PHotonics for market and societal challenges, www.interregeurope.eu/stephanie/), which is also coordinated by the cluster NMWP.NRW, and ii) project KISS ME (Knowledge & Innovation Strategies involving SME in the context of INTERREG, www.interregeurope.eu/kiss me/), which is managed by Euregio Rhein-Waal as Lead Partner.

Heinz Brueckelmann and Dirk Kalinowski (both cluster NMWP.NRW) as well as Sina Hoch of Euregio Rhein-Waal reported on their experiences with Interreg Europe projects and underlined the importance of interregional collaboration and the impact that those projects can have on the innovative capacity and competitiveness of the NRW-based regional economy. They further gave a detailed summary of the project results received so far and ongoing activities.

Special attention attracted the Action Plan that will be implemented in the framework of NMP-REG in NRW in the coming two years. The Action Plan includes several measures targeting the stimulation and support of young entrepreneurs and start-ups engaging in key enabling technologies, from information and networking events to a business accelerator programme with focus on high-tech applications in the fields of nano and micro technology, advanced materials and optical technologies.

The Interreg Europe project NMP-REG (Delivering Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials and Production to Regional Manufacturing) started on 1 April 2016 and has a duration of five years. NMP-REG aims to improve regional support instruments that address innovation processes in major areas of high-tech applications. The project consortium consists of seven partners from the five European regions of Tuscany / Italy, Flanders / Belgium, Norte / Portugal, Bucharest / Romania and North Rhine-Westphalia. NRW is represented by the cluster NMWP.NRW. NMP-REG is co-financed by the European Fund of Regional Development (ERDF). (www.interregeurope.eu/nmp-reg/).

The State Cluster NanoMicroMaterialsPhotonics.NRW (NMWP.NRW) represents and supports the North Rhine-Westphalian industrial companies, SMEs and science institutions in the areas of nanotechnology, microsystems technology, photonics and innovative materials. Its overall goal is to develop NRW to the most competitive and highest dynamic knowledge-based economic area at national and international level.

Improving healthcare, shift to sustainable energy and make our world a safer place. The development of chips drives global innovation. At the same time, ‘digitalisation’ depends on innovative and efficient hardware just as much as on software. Photonics play an important role in crossing the borders of current microsystem- and chiptechnologies. Because of this, photonics is the next big thing in Micro- and Nano electronics and fits perfectly in the
