LIGHTHOUSE – the new CD released by Viennese pianist Gerald Krampl has become again a very emotional Classical/Ambient crossover album

The recently released album LIGHTHOUSE of Viennese pianist, keyboarder and composer Gerald Krampl can be seen as the consequent continuation of the style that he had already been beginning to develop with his last work INNOCENT WASTELAND in 2009.

The nearly chamber music like structured pieces have this time no overall conceptual thematic behind, they rather are a collection of very personal solitaire impressions which were experienced throughout the one last year, and later on set to music. So f.e. the title track ‘Lighthouse’ was written under the impression of visiting ruins of dilapidated military harbor fortifications in Croatia, ‘Walking The Last Mile’ developed right after watching Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood”, ‘Nightpearls’ – written in one mystical night full of shooting stars, ‘The Guiding Light’ after lighting up a candle at the graveyard on a cold November day.

Besides the classical approach to write music for Piano + max. two strings, this relatively minimalistic and very elemental sound is again expanded with various electronic and nature sound effects to create very intense musical images and moods. Might be compared in some ways with the works of Max Richter, Olafur Arnalds, Ludovico Einaudi, Erik Satie etc. And of course you’ll find again some reminiscences to Gerald’s yearlong experiences with spiritual and meditative music with his Agnus Dei “Project for Music & Poetry”, as well as to his former Prog-Rock times with his well known bands Kyrie Eleison and Indigo.

How one might classify this music in the end is in fact of nearly no concern, because Gerald’s musical approach is since quite a time far away from any commercial or genre typical clichés, and has the only goal to transport as good as possible pure emotional feelings. Luckily it has shown that this very honest and unspectacular approach though can find appreciation in classic music circles as well as in ProgRock and New Age/Ambient journals and radios, and has led to many excellent reviews and articles in the world press.

IndigoMusic was established as a label and music production company in 1984 in Vienna by Gerald Krampl, with the main purpose to release, license and market the recordings of his own band at that time Indigo, and his former band Kyrie Eleison. But due to successful cooperation with various major companies as BMG Ariola, Polygram, Weinberger Publishing, etc., soon many other artists from different genres were also produced in the own studio, and afterwards licensed or self released.
But personal and business related reasons led to a break in the music business in 1992, and since 2000, with the start of the Agnus Dei project together with his late wife and poet Hilde, he started to work with music again. The new Sandrose Records label was founded, especially to market the own New Age related recordings, and fortunately many new international cooperation deals were quite fast successfully established. So to date, the own works marketed over the company range from the old prog-rock recordings to New Age and therapeutic music, film and multimedia scores, electronic, and the actual ambient/classical solo project.
