The technical basis of bifacial (two-sided) photovoltaic modules has been around since the 1960s. But it was only with the falling module glass prices that it became economically interesting. This technology will achieve a market share of 35% in the next few years.

The rear side of the PV modules can now also convert reflected beams (albedo) into electricity. This results in completely new applications. Using the example of a balcony railing, it is quite impressive to observe. It's like adding a second module on the back.

In my opinion, the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) also has a strong social component, because this technology allows a massive reduction in the electricity bill for apartments as well.

Thus, with good albedo, such as a reflecting balcony floor, these new double-sided solar modules generate almost 500 watts and that with an area of ​​only 2 x 1 meters. If a beautiful summer with almost 1400 full load hours of sunshine is added, then such a plant generates well and gladly about 700 kWh. At an assumed electricity price of 20 cents per kwh, it is 140 euros per year. To spend a good 700 euros less on electricity in just five years, with just a single simple AC module plugged into the Schuko outlet.
