Improved Hygiene in Hospitals via Biological Cleaning

Nature Helps in Germ Elimination and Disinfection

Willich – There is a pressing need to improve the hygiene in hospitals worldwide. All experts are in agreement thereon, given current events. The question is only: How? The tight financial situation of clinics and medical institutions makes a higher cleaning frequency and the related cost-intensive personnel expenditures more difficult. The German company Innoway GmbH thus focuses on a combination of two innovative procedures: the automatic disinfection of rooms and the finishing of surfaces which patients and hospital staff come in contact with. The novelty in this is that only biological agents, which are completely harmless for humans and animals, are used. Microorganisms like viruses, fungi and bacteria though are either prevented or eliminated.

One of the two products by Innoway is a biological disinfectant, which e.g. can be sprayed via the air conditioning system in any kind of room. The biological disinfectant is free of chlorine, aldehyde and formaldehyde, and thus no skin irritations, reddening or allergies can form. Furthermore, it is odorless.

Studies regarding toxicity of the applied agents have shown that they constitute no health hazard, because only ingredients are used which, according to legal provisions and the EU-guidelines as well as the Drinking Water Ordinance, are approved as food or food additives.

An important factor for the use in the field of hospital hygiene is the fact that the development of resistances can be nearly ruled out. The substances applied by Innoway hamper the metabolism of the microorganisms and thereby kill them.
Tests have shown that the number of pathogens - specialist also call them „colony forming units (cfu)“ – in rooms treated with the biological disinfectant is close to zero. It is essential to spread the disinfectant solution evenly throughout the room. For this, Innoway suggest a spraying system (Nano Dry Nebulizer) which has been specially developed for this purpose. Measurements on site with subsequent laboratory test are decisive in determining how often the agent has to be sprayed per day in order to no exceed the targeted total microbial count.

The system by Innoway has already been successfully tested with manufacturers of sausage and bakery products as well as in hotels. For a practical test in hospitals and the care sector, the industrial partner of Innoway ( Bedo, Munich) had already equipped two retirement homes in Switzerland as well as the Luzerner Kantonspital and the Neue Frauenklinik Bern, among others, a few years ago.

A second product group by Innoway, which is also used for biological cleaning in hospitals, is surface finishing. In rooms with stringent requirements for sterility the treated surfaces can thus be furnished with a completely smooth structure. Dust, fats or germs are unable to attach to them.

Even more important is the anti-microbial action. It is made possible through the use of titanium dioxide, a water solution containing titanium. This element naturally occurs on earth and is non-toxic and therefore neither harmful nor a burden on the environment.

If, for example, light switches, other operating elements and fittings, sinks and toilets are treated with titanium dioxide, the non-toxic solid acts as a catalyst and unfolds its anti-microbial effect. The sterility then lasts for several years.

Necessary prerequisite for this though is the influence of UV-light, without which the desired physical self-cleaning process would not be initiated. Originally, direct solar radiation was necessary for this. Innoway together with its industrial partners has in the meantime improved the procedure so far that the light emitted by lamps and other illuminants is sufficient. Subsequently, the agent, which is also used in semiconductor technology, unfolds its photo catalytic characteristics: Because of the radicalized surface thus the organic pollutants are decomposed and turned into harmless residue like e.g. carbon dioxide or water.

Marketing of Innovations Worldwide

Willich – The Innoway GmbH is an internationally operating marketing company based in Germany with a worldwide network. Innoway offers inventors and developers of innovative products, who do not possess their own distribution channels, a platform for access to over twenty countries in the world.
In doing so, Innoway creates added value, which surpasses the impact of the individual product: Procedures and products are pooled into thematically matching solutions and marketed via strong sales & distribution. Together with its domestic and international partners, Innoway develops the products and procedures further and adapts them to the respective requirements.

The thematic focus is on:
- Bio- and agrarian economy (e.g. nutrient enrichment, pest control, disinfection)
-Water management (e.g. water treatment, water desalination)
- Renewable energies
- Special fields/high-tech (e.g. façade protection, self-cleaning surfaces, low-cost -buildings/-houses)
