Set Designer for Oscar Winning Films Designs Furniture From Math Equations

Los Angeles, CA – October 6, 2010 –

“Form is a Function , x ‘ is a quote that has intrigued me for some time. Particularly the notion of ‘form’ deriving from a mathematical function rather than a more common perspective of practical functionality.Developing series 1 began an exploration of seeing forms in terms of planar geometry, reducing them to pure math equations. I arrived at a place where I could see the functional objects’ ‘form’ as a ‘function’ both practical and mathematical.”

The Turner Collective is a production laboratory fueled by production designer, art director and set designer(Oscar Winning and Oscar Nominated Films for Best Art Direction), Michael Turner. “My aim with Series 1A,” the first series in an ongoing series of exploratory furniture and functional object designs, “was to reduce reduce and reduce again the form, structure, and materials of ‘chair’ yet retain the forms’ ability to function in new beautiful unexpected ways”

Michael Turner was an integral part of the design teams behind Gucci Guilty 2010 with Frank Miller, Australia , The Kite Runner, Moulin Rouge!, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Superman Returns, The Matrix Revolutions, The Matrix Reloaded, Anna and the King, and many more including Mission Impossible 4 (now in production).

Each chair in Series 1 can be recreated by plugging the chair’s dimensions into an equation inspired by the famous Constructivist quote, ‘Form is a Function , x ‘

The equation for chair 1.3 becomes

x≈{a²φ.∠15° ∦ b²φ.∠15°} ∦ b²(400h)

Where a,b, and c are planar dimensions.

The golden ratio or phi ( φ ) used in this equation shows up many places in nature including in the design of conch shells, sunflowers, even in the arms of spiral galaxies and has been used by artists and architects through the ages to proportion their works.

The journey for Michael Turner and The Turner Collective in Series 1A is to experience the complexity of ‘more’ through the rigorous pursuit of ‘less’.
