Acekard, R4i, M3i, EZFlash Cards Compatible with Nintendo DSi 1.4.1 Update

On the 7th of September, 2010, a new firmware update was released by Nintendo generally called the 1.4.1 update. There are several small variations of this update, known as 1.4.1E in Europe, 1.4.1U in the United States, and 1.4.1C or 1.4.2 in a variety of Asian countries. However, the visual interface of all of these updates are the same. Nintendo have claimed that this new update enhances the back-end of the Nintendo DSi's firmware. The only obvious difference, however, is that most flash cards were blocked from the console. This seems to be the sole purpose of the new Nintendo DSi update.

The first to announce that their card was compatible with 1.4.1 was the EZFlash team. The EZFlash Vi card, their flagship DSi compatible card, was announced as simply compatible with the DSi 1.4.1 update without needing to flash the EZFlash Vi's firmware. In this respect the card had passed with flying colors and was never even blocked.

First to release an actual fix for the 1.4.1 update was the Acekard 2i, manufactured by the Acekard team. A piece of software was released to allow users to manually flash their own cards to make the DSi compatible. It is paramount that the card is not removed and the console not turned off during the updating process, otherwise damage to the card can be done during the upgrading process. Once updated, the icon should update to Alex Rider: Stormbreaker and the Acekard 2i will be compatible with the DSi 1.4.1 update.

Hot on the heels of the Acekard 2i was the M3i Zero team. The M3 team originally produced the M3 DS Real and M3 DS Simply cards to compete with the R4 / R4DS when Nintendo DS cards were still in its infancy. Their new flagship DSi card also had a patch released for it. The icon updates, as the Acekard does, to Alex Rider: Stormbreaker and the M3i Zero becomes compatible with the DSi 1.4.1U firmware.

Finally, the R4i SDHC card has also been updated of sorts to be compatible. As of this time there has not yet been a patch to update the R4i card outright to the 1.4.1 firmware. However, a 'new' card has been produced by the R4i team which is 1.4.1 compatible. Existing 1.4 iterations of the R4i SDHC card have not yet been updated to become compatible, but the R4 team claim they are currently working on a fix.

It is crucial that consumers do not attempt to flash their card unless they are 100% sure the card is genuine. Flashing permanently alters the hardware on a card and therefore you must only flash a card you know is the real time and compatible with the genuine firmware.
