Appointment of Dr. Margaret McDermott as Vice Chair of CONTESA

14th September 2010: CONTESA a UK registered charity that supports Aids orphans in Zambia, has today announced the appointment of Dr Margaret McDermott to a new post of Vice Chair of CONTESA.

The CONTESA board of Trustees recognised that due to the expansion of activities and programmes run and funded by the charity that they have been presented with a number of new challenges. The recent registration of CONTESA Hong Kong increased the administrative duties of the CONTESA UK Chair and highlighted an urgent requirement to introduce and appoint a UK Vice Chair.

The CONTESA spokesman explains, “This is an exciting appointment for CONTESA as it clearly demonstrates how much the charity has grown since our inception five years ago.” The spokesman added “Dr McDermott will take on administration duties and coordination of CONTESA funded projects and programmes in Zambia”.

Dr McDermott and her late husband Peter have had a long and fulfilling history with Africa through their work in a mission hospital in Rift Valley to their work with a charity enabling Africa Artisans, Tools for Self Reliance. Dr McDermott has always hoped to return to Africa where their children grew up, to contribute and be part of the positive development of Africa.

Dr McDermott met the Founder and Chair of CONTESA, Esnat Avon, during a Church function and was inspired by Esnat’s vision for CONTESA to support Aids orphans & disadvantaged children in Zambia by giving sanctuary and hope with love, compassion and respect.

Dr McDermott retired as a GP in Dorset eight years ago and became a Trustee of CONTESA in 2005. She has visited CONTESA projects in Zambia seven times and has taken CONTESA supporters to see how funds are being spent and the great work CONTESA is doing.

CONTESA is a UK registered charity (1109311) set up in 2005 by Esnat Avon and her husband Roger. Esnat, was born and raised in Zambia but now lives in the UK. She now devotes much of her time to raising funds for CONTESA and creating awareness of the plight of orphans and disadvantaged children in one of the sub-Saharan countries most devastated by the AIDS epidemic, Zambia. She manages the charity on a daily basis from her home in St. Leonards. One of CONTESA’s pledges is that every penny donated goes directly to the support of the children.
