After Generic Acetaminophen Recall, Stores Pull Bottles From Shelves
On Nov. 9, the U.S. Food and Drug (FDA) informed the public to a recall by the Perrigo Company, a drug manufacturer based in Allegan, Michigan. The recall is for 383 lots of 500-milligram acetaminophen caplets that were manufactured and distributed under various generic or store brands. An estimated 11 million bottles are affected by the recall.Consumers wondering if they are in possession of recalled acetaminophen can find out by locating the batch number printed on the container label and looking at the FDA’s list of acetaminophen recall at www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/perrigo/perrigobatchlist.html. Consumers can also see a list of stores that carry generic or store brands affected by the recall by going to: www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/perrigo/perrigocustlist.html.
There were no immediate reports of illness or injuries when the FDA announced the recall on Nov. 9; in fact, the FDA reported that the probability of the acetaminophen causing a serious health consequence is remote. But if a person were to swallow an affected acetaminophen caplet, the person could experience cuts to the mouth and throat as well as stomach pain. Of course, if a person has ingested one of the recalled acetaminophen and believes he or she is in danger or is being harmed, they should call a doctor and seek medical help.
Those in possession of the affected acetaminophen should immediately stop using the drug and keep it out of reach of children and everyone else. They should also contact the Perrigo Company at 877-546-0504. Furthermore, any adverse reactions experienced from using the recalled acetaminophen should be reported to the Perrigo Company and the FDA’s MedWatch Program by calling 800-FDA-1088, or online at www.fda.com/medwatch.
Acetaminophen is commonly known as the drug in products sold under the brand name Tylenol, though this recall does not affect any products made by Tylenol. Acetaminophen is typically taken by consumers to treat headaches, back pain, arthritis pain, and other aches and pains. The FDA has said that they do not anticipate there being a shortage of acetaminophen.
