Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services - Birmingham Ala.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – (April 15, 2010) – Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, will implement Nintendo Wii video game systems as part of a new approach to therapy for common behavioral issues in children and adolescents. Electronic gaming will be used as a supplement to Hill Crest’s current recreational therapies and overall behavior management program.

“In general, methods of caring for various behavioral disorders have not changed significantly,” said Hill Crest Child and Adolescent Nurse Manager Bridgette Bishop. “We believe the video game systems will effectively support the overall treatment intervention process and provide an additional channel to help patients express themselves.”

The games will be utilized to support interactive play, therapeutic socialization and healthy competition in the patients. At the same time, the facility expects the games will decrease impulsivity, promote body control, improve concentration and encourage positive behaviors.

According to a Michigan State University study titled, “An Overview of Using Electronic Games for Health Purposes,” video game systems can be a successful avenue to gain attention as well as motivate and educate people.

Youth at the facility diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, bipolar disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, major depressive disorder and other behavioral health disorders will benefit from the new technique beginning in May.
