Portuguese TV market stabilizes in 2009

04-09-2010 09:31 AM CET | Media & Telecommunications

Press release from: Dataxis

Overall Portuguese TV market remained flat in 2009, as the decrease in free TV revenues was offset by a growth in the pay TV market.

Portugal free TV market recorded a 4% year-over-year decrease in 2009, reaching €490 mln at the end of the year. However, Q4 results may indicate that the advertising market in Portugal is on its way to recovery, as free TV revenues increased 6% during the last three months of 2009, compared to the same period last year.

Leading media company and owner of SIC TV channel, Impresa saw its advertising revenues reach €41.5 mln in Q4, up from €38 mln in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Similarly, Media Capital’s advertising revenues increased 7% in Q4, compared to the last three months of 2008.

With around €50 mln of advertising revenues in 2009 and €230 mln of public funding, the Portuguese public broadcasting corporation RTP saw its revenues remain flat throughout the year.

On the other hand, pay-TV market was on the uptrend, as revenues increased 6.5% in 2009, up from €603 mln in 2008.

Consequently, total pay and free TV market in Portugal stabilized at around €1.12 bn in 2009.
