ISO: Travel Catalogue meets iPhone – Catalogues learn to book

From March 10th until 14th 2010 ISO Travel Solutions will present the ‘Interactive Catalogue’ at the ITB, hall 6.1, stand 112; the first mobile booking engine (MBE) which connects printed touristic media with online content via picture recognition.
In cooperation with kooaba ISO Travel Solutions introduces the first interactive travel catalogue which connects the offline-world with the pertaining online content. This unique technology will be introduced for the first time at the world’s most important touristic fair in Berlin; in an unprecedented way it bridges the gap between printed catalogues or ads and booking engines of tour operators.
ISO Travel Solutions will present an iPhone-based MBE at the ITB that recognizes photographed content of a catalogue page (alternative that of a pamphlet or even a TV screen). The app identifies the photographed object within seconds and pertaining data is send to the user’s iPhone. This includes a description of the hotel as well as a vacancy search and booking straight from the app. ISO steps into the world of augmented reality for tourism by merging real life optical information, which is shown in real time on the phone to the user and associated online data from touristic booking systems in the background.
Additional useful functions offer sending digitized catalogue pages to friends as an e-mail or via facebook, archiving them online or viewing pictures, videos and other information about destinations.
ISO Travel Solutions is a specialist in modern component based tour operator systems, outbound & incoming, airline systems, customer relationship management (CRM), hotel management systems (Hotel PMS) and SAP solutions.
kooaba – a spinoff of the Swiss federal technical college in Zurich – offers a world renown picture recognition technology that creates a photo with an associated content layer, a so called Smart Visual. This digital copy is enhanced with up-to-date information and functions and is available immediately.
Markus Kretschmer, sales director of ISO Travel Solutions, explains the motifs of the cooperation: “We have learned about kooaba via our business partner InnovaTeam and recognized the possibilities for the touristic market at once, where print media still is a large factor in the sales portfolio. Thanks to our new technology a simple photo of a catalogue page serves as the entrance key to all corresponding touristic information and last but not least as the direct entry to vacancy searches and bookings. No expert know-how, codes etc. are necessary any more. After thorough tests and development of different business scenarios with InnovaTeam, we are enabling our customers to draw new benefit from their investment into catalogues (which are still essential). For the first time print media is connected automatically with online content. This is an additional building block in the ever increasing portfolio which ISO Travel Solutions offers for the touristic value chain. ISO will increase its research in the area of augmented reality and will force development there in order to increase the benefit for the touristic market that this fascinating technology has to offer.”
