One Canadian startup wants the world to use reusable metal straws now! For Free! Why wait for the Bacardi’s, McDonald’s and Starbucks 2-year transition plan to new alternatives?

Peter Scott is founder of Canadian startup ELO Labs. ELO is the acronym for earth, land and ocean. They have created a straw for cause with a smart option, mobile cessation and reminder app for users to challenge their bad habit straw use, by taking an elo aluminum straw with them for 21 days, the science behind the challenge comes from this widely popular 1960’s book called Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. This daily reminder and informative app pings you 3 times daily at times one might use a straw and allows for daily factoids to be provided to further your bad habit breaking challenge and share to the elo straw community. The app also tracks how many straws are being saved while using the elo straw. Peter Scotts logic is “the bigger the audience participating socially the bigger the reach of alternative straws will take”. Peter mentions “I would never have thought I would be carrying a 3” by 5” inch smartphone in my pocket, but I do! so why not challenge ourselves to carry a straw that is a little longer than a pen”?

Admittingly the straw ban movement has raised global awareness about the single plastic scourge that exists in the fast convenience economy. The throwaway products from top down the straw to the lid to the cup to the bag. It’s a mangled mess of poor governance at a corporate level to governmental policies and our worldwide bad habits as a society!
We are literally drunk on plastic products for our individual consumption. The immediacy of a fast fulfillment of foods, drinks, takeaway, fast serve meals and food travel packaging is our responsibility to look inwards within ourselves to make a radical challenge to change our habits towards the toss away economy! The straw is our champion heralding the voice for radical change to ban straws within cities and whole countries. However, the battle cry is calling for abstinence or sustainable alternatives, like the lonely whale project. A relatively new organization co-founded by celebrity, Entourage fame Adrian Grenier and Lucy Sumner presents the idea of radical change at a single use plastic item and that is straws currently and then grow from there.

Elo labs wants as many people to try this radical yet novel approach and is willing to give their straws away for free with the app as option. “The more the merrier” If we can get to a tipping point of people participating in the 21 Day challenge and free straws, then we can echo this campaign and change bad habits today and not have to wait for the 2 year promises by big plastic business’s to change or catch up with their single plastic product waste plans, like Starbucks and McDonalds!
