What is it with Scandinavian kids, blocks and four-letter

Everybody knows LEGO’s blocks and IKEA’s assemble-at-home-furniture. And now some young Danish inventors, with yet another four-letter brand, want to help us make our kids more active and motor intelligent, and at the same time trigger their inherent creativity – with the help of big foam blocks which can be transformed into a lot of functional creations. First step is the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, where MODU is launching this September.

Jonathan Rasmussen and Theo Ginman are young design engineers, born and raised in the Scandinavian tradition, where creativity and an active lifestyle used to be key elements. But also here in the North tablets are taking over the life of our kids and the two friends decided that something needed to be done. They wanted to make it fun again for kids as well as dads (and mothers) to play offline. And soon MODU was born.

MODU is a set of interchangeable blocks of hard EVA foam that can be shaped into numerous figures for instance vehicles, animals and objects. MODU can rock, roll or stay steady depending on shape. So MODU appeals to all kinds of parents and grandparents, from the wildest (tom-)boys who just wants speed and action to the parent who only wants to build cute animals (and to the children as well).

’We know that the key to success for a toy is that both the kids AND the parents have fun and can interact’, says Jonathan Rasmussen. ‘That is why so many educational toys have failed – and why LEGO keeps working’ he says.
Being Scandinavian, health, safety and environmental impact is key to MODU, so it goes without saying, that the foam blocks are without the hormone disrupting phthalates and have gone through the toughest tests for fumes and toxicity. ‘It is also important for us to stress that MODU is not just for small toddlers. Like LEGO, you can grow with MODU. It is just the shapes you choose and what you play with them that change’ Jonathan says. Even as a teenager, you can utilize the blocks and for instance build your own bespoke balance board to help you improve your sport. ‘In fact my business partner Theo is a keen MMA fighter, and he uses the blocks all the time to improve his balance,’ Jonathan says.

MODU is a brand-new toy that allows children to build their own functioning creations, promoting physical activity and stimulating their motoric development throughout childhood.

MODU excels by being a one-of-a-kind concept, yet being highly recognisable in its main functional principle; a versatile play experience with the benefits of enhancing important physical milestones in multiple developmental stages and ages. The toy comprises tactile foam blocks, pins and wheels, and an endless source of explorative and creative builds of varying complexity, where only imagination is the limit, and where the whole body can be used for balancing, rolling, climbing, rocking, jumping or riding fun. Thus, MODU eliminates the need for multiple expensive and short-lived toys through its simple, fun and long-lasting nature.
