Automotive Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Pressure Sensor

Sensors are a vital part of an automobile and play a massive role in emission control systems. It has become a necessity to devise new emission control technologies and employ them due to the current pollution norms. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system works by recirculating the engine exhaust gas back into the cylinder. This lowers the engine temperature and curbs nitrogen oxide emission.

The exhaust gas pressure sensor operates by measuring the pressure difference between the charge flow in the engine intake and exhaust. The sensor transmits the signal to the power train control module about the quantity of charge flowing. The sensor with the EGR valve then regulates the exhaust system pressure. If the pressure sensor detects low pressure in the system, it opens up the EGR valve to increase the pressure, and when the system has a high pressure, the EGR valve closes down to lower the pressure.

The EGR pressure sensor is mounted on the exhaust manifold or, in some cases, on the engine firewall. The sensor is not mounted directly on the exhaust due to high temperature of the exhaust manifold; however, it is connected via a stainless steel line.

Gas pressure sensors are employed in various applications such as automotive, petrochemicals, consumer electronics, space applications, and the industrial sector due to their improved sensitivity. Automobiles have to incorporate emission control systems in order to comply with the statutory pollution norms. Thus, the demand for emission control sensors is anticipated to increase. A diesel particulate filter is placed in the EGR to trap the particulate matter and release more environmental-friendly exhaust.

Advanced technologies involve the mounting of pressure sensors before and after the filter to record the pre- and post-pressure difference. This process advances the regeneration process of the EGR to maintain emission and obtain an optimum engine pressure for higher efficiency and good economy. There are certain restraints for the sensors such as high cost, devising them to work under very high temperatures, the need to customize operating pressure from model to model.
