Lead School JMA Pilani Celebrates UN World Environment Day WED 2018

Starting from 1972, 5th June is celebrated globally every year as the World Environment Day - WED. The United Nations, through this day, stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The theme chosen for 2018 is "Beat Plastic Pollution" which is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time.

It has always been said that God is everywhere and in everything but lately with Plastics being found everywhere and in everything it has become a satire and assumed demonic dimensions. While plastic has many valuable uses, everyone has become over reliant on single-use or disposable plastic resulting in severe environmental consequences.

Smt. Jamuna Mishra Academy (JMA) established in the year 2004 is presently one of the most sought after schools at Pilani considered as Oasis in the desert state of Rajasthan well known in India today for top ranking institutions like BITS Pilani as well as CSIR Laboratory CEERI and globally renowned Birla Science Museum. JMA Pilani which has a rich tradition of observing various days of national and international significance celebrated World Environment Day on 05 Jun 2018. It is a matter of pride that JMA Pilani is a regular participant in Green Olympiad conducted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

Every year the world uses 500 billion plastic bags and each year, at least 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans, the equivalent of a full garbage truck every minute. In the last decade, the world produced more plastic than in the whole last century and 50 per cent of the plastic used is single-use or disposable. With 1 million plastic bottles every minute, Plastic indeed makes up 10% of all of the waste the world at large generates.

To quote UN Secretary-General, António Guterres "On World Environment Day, the message is simple: reject single-use plastic. Refuse what you can’t re-use. Together, we can chart a path to a cleaner, greener world."

Nearly one third of the plastic packaging used escapes collection systems, which means that it ends up clogging city streets and polluting the natural environment. Every year, 13 million tons of plastic leak into the oceans, where it smothers coral reefs and threatens vulnerable marine wildlife. The plastic that ends up in the oceans can circle the Earth four times in a single year, and it can persist for up to 1,000 years before it fully disintegrates. Plastic also makes its way into our water supply – and thus into human bodies. What harm does that cause? Scientists still aren’t sure, but plastics contain a number of chemicals, many of which are toxic or disrupt hormones. Plastics can also serve as a magnet for other pollutants, including dioxins, metals and pesticides.

This year’s World Environment Day provides an opportunity for everyone to embrace the many ways that can help to combat plastic pollution around the world. There are so many things that can be done – from asking the restaurants one frequents to stop using plastic straws and refusing plastic cutlery, to bringing one’s own coffee mug to work, to pressuring the local municipal and panchayat authorities to improve how they manage city’s waste, bringing your own shopping bags to the supermarket.

Sharing the above details, Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan put a team in JMA to prepare paper bags from old newspapers and distributed to the school staff. The school staff stood in front of Nagarpalika Building and distributed newspaper bags to passersby. Advocating the slogan “If you can’t reuse it, refuse it”
