The quest for unbiased reviews

Whenever you read an “unbiased” on the web it is very likely that you will meet words like great, excellent and best. Is there any way to find genuine unbiased reviews on the web? Jason Damon, CEO of ConsumerTopTen.com thinks that yes, such a quest can be completed successfully.

August 18, 2006 – The cyberspace today is not particularly appealing for those in search of a genuine, unbiased review. Consumertopten.com attempts to solve this problem by allowing your average web surfer to add a rating and a review to the e-commerce sites presented. This however is no guarantee that the reviews themselves will be unbiased. It makes sense for a business to advertise itself, by employing various individuals to give them high ratings and favorable reviews. It is a problem that decent web directories have faced since their advent.

Jason Damon, CEO of consumertopten.com comments: “It is indeed a challenge to screen out those blatant advertising reviews, but we took the approach of moderating the review submittal process and the results are more than satisfactory. We are also relying on the large of users to help obtain an accurate rating. It’s the democracy of e-commerce, if someone posts a very high rating, while the other reviews show a rather mediocre performance, it will definitely raise an eyebrow from the potential consumer. The popularity of the website and the active community acts as dampening factor on this issue.”

This all seems nice and dandy, but what about the multiple fake ratings that seem to affect this sort of websites? The same Jason Damon replies: “Here is where the moderating team truly shows its value. We constantly check variables like the IP address of the user and we are quite able to detect these fake ratings. Also we are strongly considering the option of introducing a feature that will allow users to rate other users. We really think highly of the self regulating capability that a large community usually boasts.”

Of course the advantages of a large community reviewing community are visible when the community is large. This comes as the main challenge that this sort of directory faces. Consumertopten.com chose a middle approach. Jason Damon explains: “In the initial stages we developed our own reviews. To ensure transparency we clearly state that these ratings and reviews were posted by our staff. This measure seemed effective enough to trigger an avalanche effect and right now the community is very strong.”
