16. November 2009 | Final round of the PERI Construction Exercise 2009

Having made the most convincing case to the jury of specialists, Maximilian Sedlmair, from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich, was named winner of the seventh, international PERI Construction Exercise 2008/2009. In the final round of the competition, which took place at the beginning of November in the PERI training centre in Weissenhorn, the five best teams presented their projects.

In 2008 and 2009, almost 400 information folders containing assignment details for the seventh PERI Construction Exercise were sent out – requested by a wide range of training institutes and faculties world-wide. Up to the 30 June 2009 deadline, a total of 36 entries had been received from Germany, Austria, Italy as well as Malaysia and USA. The creators of the five best solutions were then invited to the final round of judging at PERI headquarters in Weissenhorn.

Three-day final round
On the day of the decision, the participants – who had arrived the day before with their supervising professors – gave their presentations. Subsequently, each presenter had to face critical questions from the jury which consisted of four specialists from the construction industry. While jury members met to discuss the merits of each presentation, the participants and accompanying professors visited the two PERI exhibition halls. Here, they were keen to take the opportunity of experiencing the climb up to lofty heights with the help of the ACS self-climbing technology. A guided tour of the plant was also part of the programme where the guests could convince themselves of the efficiency at the Weissenhorn central manufacturing facility.

At the end of the day, the placings were then announced with the jury having taken both the presentation and answering of the questions into consideration along with the required written work for the construction exercise:

1st place: Maximilian Sedlmair, University of Applied Sciences, Munich
2nd place: Andreas Karl Pelnar, Technical University Graz
3rd place: Stefan Fröde, University of Applied Sciences, Zittau/Görlitz
4th place: Thomas Kramer, University of Applied Sciences, Munich
5th place: Lars Wiedersheim, Technical University Munich

However, the winners include not only these five but all teams which participated in the PERI Construction Exercise – and not just because those finishing in the sixth to eleventh places also received attractive cash prizes. This is because the project already provides all participants with extensive practical experience during their studies: on the basis a specific project example, all aspects of construction operations have to be dealt with – ranging from building site facilities through to formwork and scaffolding solutions as well as the execution of construction work and schedules. This greatly benefits all participants with regard to their future jobs at construction companies.

On the third and last day, this practical experience was intensified for all presenters who took part in the final round by giving them the opportunity to actually visit the construction projects they had worked on. The varied and interesting programme was rounded off by a final visit to a large building site in Ulm.
