Abstract
Global millet production amounted to 29,381 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +1.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global millet output pursued a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures decreased at an average annual rate of -1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +27% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global millet production attained its maximum volume of 34,449 thousand tonnes in 2011. From 2012 to 2015, the total millet output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, global millet production was buoyed by growth of population and growth of food production. These key factors are to remain relevant with regard to millet output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a slight curtailment of the harvested area and a noticeable contraction of the yield figures.

The world millet harvested area amounted to 34,204 thousand ha in 2015, which was almost equal to the previous year figure. The harvested area indicated a small contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -0.6% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total millet harvested area peaked in 2010, falling back in the following year. From 2011 to 2015, the total millet harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.

The global average millet yield amounted to 9 thousand hg/ha in 2015, fluctuating near the previous year level. The yield figures recorded an downward trend over the period under review, with a compound annual growth rate standing at -1.1% from 2007 to 2015. However, the yield levels displayed some little fluctuations over the recent years. The highest millet yields were recorded in 2008, when it peaked at 10 thousand hg/ha. Afterwards, it decreased slightly and then fluctuated around these levels throughout the analyzed period.
