German open-source provider heeds their customers’ call

Straubing (Germany), June 08 2006

OTRS GmbH, leading manufacturer of open source trouble ticket system
software, opened today their first US branch in Cupertino, in the heart of
Silicon Valley. The open-source specialists strive to expand their service
field to an international market as a solution for service desks, call
centers and other service needs, and thereby position themselves globally as
a strong competitor to proprietary software providers.

OTRS accomplishes this step without outside capital and remains loyal to
their philosophy of organic growth. Area firm Mindjet Inc. has already
signed on as the branch’s first client.

“There are already more than a thousand businesses and organisations in the
United States that use OTRS, for example General Motors and NASA. Because we
had operated solely out of Germany, usually local system retailers would
assume running the project. Still, we get inquiries almost daily from the
USA about OTRS and our services,” commented André Mindermann, CEO of OTRS
GmbH.

“Customers want the highest quality, and all the more so with open source
software. And their best bet is to get it straight from the originators.
It’s simply a consequential step for us to heed the call and personally
offer, customize, and give support for this software that we created,
developed and promoted ourselves in this key American market. We also hope
that our US branch will yield valuable input for our next steps in growth,
because traditionally in the US service plays a much greater roll than in
Germany.”

CTO Martin Edenhofer gives yet a further motivation: “Anyone looking for an
open source ticket request solution for their service field will most
certainly choose OTRS. At this point, we don’t want to settle for being
thought of as merely the best open-source variant; we are technically on par
with if not better than any proprietary offer out there. That’s why we want
to draw a direct line of comparison with our competitors, and they come
almost without exception from the USA”

About the OTRS Product

The Open Ticket Request System (OTRS) – created by German-based OTRS GmbH –
is an open source ticket request system that enables businesses and service
organizations to manage large numbers of service requests like customer
telephone calls, faxes, and e-mails. The system allows support, sales,
pre-sales, billing, internal IT, help desk, and other departments to react
quickly to incoming inquiries. It is distributed under the GNU General
Public License (GPL) and tested on Linux, Solaris, AIX, FreeBSD, OpenBSD,
Mac OS 10.x, and Windows.

The trouble ticket system OTRS, freely available on the internet, was
brought to life in 2001 as a GPL project. The German founders have worked
with trouble ticket systems since 1998 and founded OTRS GmbH in 2003. The
makeup of OTRS GmbH is the result of an ever-growing demand for professional
consulting, support, and service for OTRS. Already more than 20,000
businesses and organizations worldwide use OTRS, including Swisscard,
Toshiba, General Motors, Nasa, as well as all German embassies. Company
headquarters are located in Bad Homburg, the development center in Munich;
consultants, support partners and developers are connected virtually and
spread out over the entire planet.
