Running for Ghana with Tesco

A Perthshire primary school is breaking records to help African school children.

Muthill Primary School, in Crieff, is one of many schools taking part in this year’s Tesco Great School Run. Here, students are going the extra mile to raise funds to supply a Ghana school with vital equipment needed to help children study.

Keri Reid, a teacher at the school, is setting out on a three-week teaching trip to the Juliet-Johnson School in Tafo, Eastern Ghana.

Thanks to the hard work and fitness of her class, she will be able to buy the school a range of essentials including, books, blackboards, writing equipment and share her advice and knowledge on current teaching methods.

Keri said: “The class have really got into running as part of the keep fit activity we do and they suggested that we do a sponsored run. The opportunity to participate in the Tesco Great School Run came at the same time so we jumped at the chance to be part of a Guinness World Record attempt!

“The class have set up ‘GAG’ (Ghana Action Group) and so far have raised £375 through a bring-and-buy sale, selling cakes and candy, Christmas crafts and an Easter egg hunt.

“Thanks to the additional sponsorship we hope to raise through the run, I’m sure our total will be even higher. All the children involved have been brilliant!”

Organiser Nova International is expecting over a quarter of a million Key Stage 2 children from across the country to participate in the run. Over 650 schools have already registered and will collectively participate in a series of co-ordinated two kilometre fun runs at hundreds of schools on Wednesday 21 June, and attempt to gain an official entry into the Guinness World Records book.

Head of Corporate Responsibility at Tesco, Debra Stones, said: “I’m delighted the children of Muthill Primary School are supporting one of many worthwhile causes that thousands of children are involved in during the Tesco Great School Run. Last year was a phenomenal success and I’m sure this year is going to be even bigger! I’d like to wish good luck to everyone involved.”

Excited about her trip, Keri added: “It is something I have always wanted to do since I was young. I got in touch with the director of the school in Ghana about spending some time there during the UK summer holidays and I’m really looking forward to it!”
