Outsourcing industry has reason for worries

Indian BPOs are worrying about the rising competition of BPO/KPO industry across the developing economies. Now, the new cause of concern is the vanishing experienced staff in the middle management. Reports on the leading business news channel has sent the ripple which can be seen at the higher level of outsourcing industry.

What strikes overseas client on BPO work floor first is the presence of young employees at all levels of management. It sends the signals of inexperience of the firm. However, clients do not object for young employees but they have the opinion of having experienced people also at the middle level.

“Many of our foreign clients have expressed their concern about the inexperienced workforce in outsourcing industry,” says Ramesh Garewal, HR manager of the outsourcing company in Delhi.

“This is 4.6 US Billion dollar industry, growing at 40% annually. If our clients are worried then it would cast a shadow on the growth, which would make already struggling industry more worse,” he said.

“Outsourcing industry is no wonder, the fastest growing industry in India at present. We foresee additional 3-400,000 employees in year 2006”, Ramesh added.

“Even at 40% growth, we can still feel the heat of clients’ unwillingness to increase the hourly rates for employees, despite the rising costs. The industry is already making its level best on backward integration to cut the overheads without compromising on quality output,” he reiterated.

Even Nasscom is thinking it seriously. “We know that it is a matter of great concern to the industry. We are trying all possible ways and means of dealing with this issue,” said Kiran Karnik, President, NASSCOM
