Dynamic Young Start-up Develops Breakthrough Wind Turbine Technology

Climate Change Mitigation and Disaster Risk Adaptation Using Wind Energy and Satellite Communication, Quezon City, Philippines

Climate Change Mitigation and Disaster Risk Adaptation Using Wind Energy and Satellite Communication, Quezon City, Philippines

Challenergy, Inc., a start-up company composed of brilliant young Japanese engineers and entrepreneurs, has successfully developed the world's first wind turbine that can continuously generate power even in high speeds typical of Category 5 typhoon.

The 1-kW prototype of this technology is being field tested in Nanjo City, Okinawa. In 2017, Okinawa was visited by Typhoon Talim which had a maximum recorded wind speed of 140mph (225kph). The Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine was shown to continue to generate power under a wind speed of 180kph.

Presently, Challenergy is developing its 10kW, and will be installing it in Okinawa in 2018. They have also partnered with SkyPerfect-JSAT, a Japanese satellite communications company, to be able to offer a solution for disaster risk adaptation measures, rural electrification and closing the digital divide between urban and rural areas.

In the Philippines, Challenergy has partnered with Natures Renewable Energy Development Corporation (NAREDCO), a duly registered with the Securities ad Exchange Commission and the Department of Energy as an RE projectdeveloper, to develop their business in the country, from doing feasibility studies to the marketing of their technologies.

In October 2017, Challenergy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Power Corporation of the Philippines to conduct a feasibility study to understand the needs of the Philippines in terms of power, especially during typhoon calamities. The study also aims to identify potential locations for the installation and demonstration of a 10-kW Magnus VAWT.

In a span of three (3) months, the study team visited the provinces of Catanduanes, Batanes, Albay and Leyte, to assess the different areas.

The results of the study was presented on January 18, Thursday, from 10:00am to 3:00pm, in a seminar entitled "Climate Change Mitigation and Disaster Risk Adaptation Using Wind Energy and Satellite Communication" held at SEAMEO-Innotech, Commonwealth, Quezon City. It was graced by representatives from relevant government agencies, headed by Dr. Esperanza Cayanan, Chief of Weather Services of PAGASA, Ms. Maria Gerarda Merilo of the Climate Change Office of the EMB, and Mr Paulo Jonas Alan of the Information and Communications Technology Division of the NDRRMC. The seminar was also participated in by the private sector, represented by renewable energy developers and suppliers.

Challenergy Inc. is a Japanese company, inventor of the world's first Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, that can continue generating power amidst a Category 5 typhoon.

Skyperfect J-SAT, a Japanese satellite company, has partnered with Challenergy to provide a disaster risk adaptation technology solution by coupling satellite communications with wind power generation, for use in typhoon-prone regions.

Natures Renewable Energy Development Corporation (NAREDCO) is a Philippine renewable energy company, developing utility-scale solar and biomass power plants, rooftop solar systems, waste-to-energy systems in the country.
