Dr Pratap Singh calls it a day on 31 July 2009 from BITS Pilani

With his tall stature and booming voice, Prof Pratap Singh takes his inspiration from Robert Frost quote "I'm not a teacher, but an awakener" and the generations of students whom he has taught at BITS Pilani for the past over four decades will vouch for that.

1940 born Prof Pratap Singh completed his Masters in Mathematics from erstwhile Birla Science College, Pilani in 1963. He went ahead and completed his PhD in 1966 from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani. His research had focus on the Theory of Transforms.

Despite his mastery over several transforms of the Laplace, Fourier, Mellin, Hankel and Z transforms kind, Dr Pratap Singh decided to participate in the transformation of students of BITS to become dreamers, performers and achievers by teaching mathematics.

The statement of an Ex student of BITS Pialni, Anand Srinivasan, goes like this "When winter floor temperature touches minus 4 degrees, you’d see a Prof. Pratap Singh Class room jam packed at 8AM with students who don’t have seats sitting on the floor and standing on the windows."

He joined BITS Pilani as a faculty member in 1966 and during his 43 years long teaching experience has taught several mathematics courses at Pilani campus covering Calculus, Linear Algebra, Higher Calculus, Complex Variables, Fourier series and Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, Optimization Techniques, Operations Research, etc.

He has significantly contributed to the teaching and evaluation process of various Mathematics courses for several off campus work integrated learning programmes which include the BS Power Engineering for NTPC, THDC, Hindalco Renusagar, BS Process Engineering for Tata Chemicals Babrala, BS Engineering Design for L&T e-Engineering Solutions Vadodara, MS Software Engineering for Wipro WASE and Techmahindra etc.

The BITS Alumni Association BITSAA organizes every year during October Silver Jubilee Reunion and the alumni gathering is nothing short of a stellar constellation of Chairmen, Managing Directors, COOs, CEOs, CTOs, CIOs, Scientists, Presidents and Vice Presidents, Techies, Entrepreneurs, Media Moguls, Academicians, Realtors as well as Consultants from all walks of life. As part of the reunion celebrations, the alumni take pleasure in honoring their beloved teachers which has always included Prof Pratap Singh for their career achievements.

Professor Pratap Singh enjoyed his teaching for the last 43 years at BITS Pilani, and on 31st July 2009 his colleagues, current students and alumni across the globe wish him a happy retired life.

However, Prof Pratap Singh with his characteristic broad smile says "I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep, many more miles to go before I sleep."

Prof Pratap Singh can be contacted at drpsinghbits@gmail.com
