Frankenmuth Cheese Haus to Get New Building – Work Begins Jan.

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. Jan. 3, 2018 -- A major expansion and relocation is coming for the Frankenmuth Cheese Haus, currently located at 561 South Main Street. The Cheese Haus will move to a new 17,000-square-foot Bavarian-themed building at 545 S. Main Street, a property that historically was the Bavarian Inn Lodge’s Schnitzelbank Shop and most recently home to Healthy Habitz. Demolition of the Schnitzelbank structure will begin Jan. 8 with completion of the new Cheese Haus slated for fall 2018.

The new building will house three levels. The main floor will offer additional space for check out services and product displays, including three cheese cutting areas and a large sampling area where customers can try Frankenmuth Cheese Haus products. Cheese production will also take place on this level with the entire process visible to guests. The second floor will provide enough room to accommodate motor coach and other groups for cheese and wine/beer tasting, allowing them to sample a larger variety of products in a more formal setting. The basement level will house employee areas and storage.

"The new building will feature Bavarian architecture like the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and the Bavarian Inn Lodge, with the main feature being a 60-foot onion tower and figurine movement called a Figurinespiel. The animated story will tell of popular cheeses from around the world and also feature a sundial," said Judy Zehnder Keller, president of the Frankenmuth Cheese Haus and Bavarian Inn Lodge. "While we regret that these improvements will create some inconvenience, we determined that the total replacement plan makes the most sense."

The new structure will also become the official location for the Cheese Trap Food Truck launched last summer. The Cheese Trap features a variety of mouthwatering options such as gourmet grilled cheese, fried cheese curds, tomato bisque soup and freshly squeezed lemonade.

R.C. Hendrick and Sons of Saginaw has been awarded the construction contract.

The current Cheese Haus building will become retail space in 2019. To keep up with construction updates, follow the Cheese Haus on Facebook.

The Frankenmuth Cheese Haus specializes in the production and sale of imported and domestic cheese. Cheese Haus artisans make homemade cheese spreads including garlic, jalapeno, horseradish, bacon, smokey jalapeno, and a three-cheese spread. In-store, the staff creates delicious specialty flavored cheeses including chocolate, chocolate mint, chocolate peanut butter, strawberry, and blueberry cheese. These many cheese options are complemented by an abundant variety of crackers, meat, and mustards/sauces. A special Cheese Haus team also runs the Cheese Trap food truck launched in the summer 2017.
