World Premiere In Berlin: Familie Flöz Presents Dr Nest At The Halle Ostkreuz

With the upcoming world premiere in Berlin on March 28, 2018 of Dr Nest, Familie Flöz will be transforming the venue, Halle Ostkreuz, into an arena of illusions and unique poetry. The curtain will then be raised for the latest production by the legendary theatre company which will be on show in Berlin until April 1, 2018. After Berlin, Dr Nest will go on tour in Italy and France.

With its style-defining, melancholic and yet extremely witty mask theatre, the Berlin-based company has achieved a huge fan community worldwide over the past two decades. The key to the success of Familie Flöz may be found in the ambiguously intoxicating mélange of tragedy, grotesquely and very precisely adjusted frailties and turbulences as well as very precise character drawing. Like no other company, Familie Flöz has levied the masquerade into an artform.

True to their tradition, the bustling international collective of artists will be presenting their latest production, Dr Nest, as a mix of representational parforce, combined with magical set designs, haunting light and sound effects.
Unlike their previous productions, Dr Nest also includes the spoken word.

The Storyline:
As Dr Nest boards the night train, attempting to turn his back on bitter memories and a fraught life, night is falling on «Villa Blanca». Upon his arrival at this remote sanatorium, a meeting point for mad fates, he confidently reports for duty. Driven by curiosity, a thirst for knowledge and empathy, he encounters his patients’ phenomena, which are as peculiar as they are puzzling: extinguished memories, bodies with lives of their own, demons and hallucinations. Soon, Dr Nest even finds himself at risk of losing his grasp on his sense of control. What is initially alienating appears quickly as a ludicrous reflection of one’s own doubts and insecurities.

The fine line between normal and abnormal, between deliberate and forced, between healthy and ill fades before his eyes.

With their new play, Familie Flöz returns to the mask. With and through these, the ensemble is able to cast its gaze onto the mysterious cartography of the brain as well as into the depths of the soul. Inspired by the paradoxical stories of the neurologist and storyteller Oliver Sacks, the play opens the doors to a fictive sanatorium and reveals to the spectator the bizarre world of its residents — including the staff. Movement, space, words, light and sound create a story about the fragility of human life, which is as tragic as it is funny.

With Dr Nest, Familie Flöz is approaching the complex frames-of-mind of their protagonists with sure instinct. While the focus is on the individual human fate and condition behind the mental illness, modern scientific perceptions are not neglected. The concepts of normality and abnormality are scrutinized to a point where even the audience will be questioning its own normality.

Familie Flöz is a moving, yet bizarre international family of artists that apparently rose up from the dark womb of the earth through a long shaft to reach the daylight for the very first time. It was this very image that put Familie Flöz on the international theatre map in 1996. Behind this metaphor lies the philosophie of an entirely distinct working method of this ever-changing group of theatre makers.
Each play is developed in a collective working process and awakens a new universe inhabited by characters and stories that have cleared their path from obscurity to light. Through constant rediscovery of century-old disciplines such as acting, mask theatre, dance, clownery, acrobatics, magic and improvisation, Familie Flöz creates theatre experiences of a unique poetry.
