Drive by wire is essentially a technology which replaces conventional physical connections by a wire that carries an electronic signal. For instance, in gasoline engines the throttle cable usually runs from gas pedal to the throttle body which limits the quantity of air going inside the engine. When the gas pedal is pressed down the butterfly in the throttle opens broadly thereby allowing more amount of air to get into the engine. On fuel injected vehicles the sensors help in the detection of additional air and increased throttle position. After studying the condition, these sensors instruct the fuel injectors to provide more fuel so that the total power generated in the engines is more. In a throttle by wire, a sensor is attached to the gas pedal. This sensor detects how far the pedal has been pressed after which the information is sent to the car's computer. Then the computer analyzes the information it received and instructs a motor to unclutter the butterfly present in the throttle body. As the computer has the control of the throttle things such as idle cruise control, speed control, and traction control, these can be integrated easily. Since automatic transmissions are controlled by the computer, it can regulate the throttle throughout the gear changes.
