Advantech unveils 10GE ATCA Blade with Intel® Xeon® Processor

Advantech, a leading global manufacturer of telecom computing blades and multi-core network platforms announced in separate releases, two new 10GE-enabled products exclusively tuned for the quad-core Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 Series.

Advantech’s MIC-5320 AdvancedTCA Blade with 10GigE connectivity combines computing performance with I/O flexibility in a power efficient design. Supporting the latest Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series based on Intel’s latest microarchitecture supporting DDR3 technology with a 3 channel memory controller integrated into the CPU, the single processor quad-core MIC-5320 outperforms previous generation dual socket designs. Even with such an increase in power the MIC-5320 has excellent thermal characteristics. Built with next generation products in mind, there is a smooth upgrade path to future processors that are able to support more than 4 cores.

Using Intel’s latest Gigabit Ethernet and 10GE MAC solutions supporting enhanced offloading techniques and virtualization features users can deploy the full power of this innovative multi-core technology. Supporting up to 48GB of memory it can run database in memory applications easily - backed up by a 4 channel SAS RAID controller that makes the blade equally suitable for control plane applications that require disk IO with RAID and failover support.

The MIC-5320 demonstrates the company’s ability to design and manufacture mission-critical products for the core of the network. Focused on high bandwidth network element and data plane applications, the MIC-5320 is a key element for IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) compliant media gateways, application servers and media servers as well as 3G Radio Network Controllers and Base Station Controllers.

“The combination of these latest Intelprocessors, chipset and 10GE controllers in one platform providing acceleration and off-loading features boosts x86 networking performance to new levels. Telecom and network equipment providers can now consolidate some of the custom built networking designs back into the server blades and use x86 software to perform the functions previously executed in dedicated hardware. This is a big deal," explains Peter Marek, director of the Blade Computing Division of Advantech’s Networks and Communications Group.

Mike Langlois, General Manager Networking and Telecom business at Wind River added. “We’re pleased to see Advantech’s MIC-5320 with on-board Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 Series already running Wind River’s PNE-LE Carrier Grade Linux. This really helps Telecom customers get ahead of the curve on early application integration”.

The mid size AMC bay supports more than just mass storage AMCs. With support for PCIex4 gen 2 and telco clocks interfaces, it opens up possibilities for high speed IO interface integration, telco backhaul interface modules and co-processing engines. In addition to utilizing the chipset’s RASUM features, redundant firmware hubs and onboard USB disks, BIOS and firmware enhancements to support CMOS backup, override and HPM.1 upgradeability make this blade a true carrier grade solution. The MIC-5320’s overall design and built in flexibility using FPGA technology and RTM customization broadens the application fields for this product and reduces time to market.

With the introduction of the MIC-5320 & the FWA-6500 network application platform also announced today, customers can gain access to the latest Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 Series technology in multiple form factors – the best of all worlds. Both Products are sampling now at major OEM’s with general availability planned for the second quarter 2009.
