MIC-5333

Latest platform upgrade maximizes network performance while accelerating encryption throughput and reducing storage overhead

Taipei, Taiwan, Dec 5th 2013 – Advantech (TWSE: 2395.TW) today announced an important upgrade to its AdvancedTCA product line which gives network equipment providers (NEPs) the ability to address security threats in real-time without adversely impacting performance. It also brings greater storage efficiency through compression offload which reduces overall network capacity needs.
The upgrade announced today significantly boosts the performance of Advantech’s MIC-5333 ATCA processor blade deployed in its flagship Netarium™ systems. Based on the Intel® Xeon® Processor Platform for Large-Scale Communications Infrastructure Systems the MIC-5333 now comprises two of the latest Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v2 series processors coupled with the new Intel® Communications Chipset 8955. Additional chipsets implemented as PCIe endpoints on Fabric Mezzanine Modules (FMMs) can be added to further boost acceleration and offload performance.
NEPs and operators can now make substantial reductions in CAPEX and OPEX by deploying workload -optimized equipment for new platform rollouts, including Network Function Virtualization (NFV) implementations. NFV leverages standard virtualization technology to consolidate multiple network equipment types onto commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers, carrier-grade servers and ATCA systems used in core networks or enterprise data centers. Functions such as firewalls, routers, WAN optimization controllers and other network devices can all run virtualized on COTS hardware but require significantly more processing performance to handle cryptography and compression algorithms.
By offloading these algorithms to accelerators in the chipset, valuable processing cores can be allocated to value add applications services and virtual machine capacity is significantly increased.
“We’re helping equipment providers to address evolving subscriber features while maximizing network performance” said Peter Marek, senior director x86 solutions, Advantech NCG. “The new Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v2 family delivers two additional cores at the same power over the previous generation while the new chipset provides more than double the performance for IPSec, SSL and compression offload over the previous generation blade based on the Intel® Communications Chipset 8910.”
The new chipset supporting next generation Intel® QuickAssist technology offers a consistent backwards-compatible API for hardware acceleration with up to 20Gbps Compression Acceleration and up to 50Gbps Crypto Acceleration performing 40K RSA 2k-bit operations per second.
Platforms based on the upgraded blade target large-scale communications infrastructure systems for virtualized and non-virtualized applications including WAN Optimization, Cloud Security Gateways, Integrated VPN/Firewall appliances, UTM Gateways, Routers as well as 3G & 4G/LTE infrastructure equipment.
Customer samples will be available starting in first quarter 2014.
