Global artichoke production amounted to 1,551 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -1.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global artichoke output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +0.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +6% from the previous year level. In that year, the global artichoke production attained its maximum volume of 1,627 thousand tonnes. From 2013 to 2015, the total artichoke output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global artichoke production was primarily driven by popularity of healthy eating and diversification of diet. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the artichoke output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a slight curtailment of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The country with the largest volume of the artichoke output in absolute volumes was Italy (511 thousand tonnes), accounting for 33% of global production. Moreover, artichoke output in Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Spain (249 thousand tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Egypt with a share of 13%. From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of Italy's artichoke producton stood at +0.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Spain (+1.2% per year) and Egypt (+1.7% per year).

The world artichoke harvested area amounted to 132 thousand ha in 2015, which was 2.3% more than the previous year figure. The harvested area indicated a small contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -0.1% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total artichoke harvested area peaked in 2007, declining in the following year. From 2008 to 2015, the total artichoke harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.

The global average artichoke yield amounted to 117 thousand hg/ha in 2015, falling by -3.6% from the previous year figure. The yield figures recorded an upward trend over the period under review, with a compound annual growth rate standing at +0.6% from 2007 to 2015. These yield figures maintained, all in all, a stable trend pattern throughout the analyzed period. The highest artichoke yields were recorded in 2012, when it peaked at 131 thousand hg/ha. Afterwards, it decreased slightly and then fluctuated around these levels throughout the analyzed period.
