Green coffee Imports

In 2017, approx. 6.9M tonnes of coffee (green) were imported worldwide; approximately reflecting the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when import increased by 5% year-to-year. Over the period under review, green coffee imports attained its maximum volume of 7M tonnes in 2016, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, green coffee imports totaled $21B in 2017. In general, it indicated a strong growth from 2007 to 2017: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. In that year, green coffee imports attained its maximum level of $27B. From 2012 to 2017, growth of green coffee imports failed to regain its strength.

Green coffee Imports By Country

The U.S. (1.5M tonnes), and Germany (1M tonnes) represented the main importers of coffee (green) in 2017, recording near 22%, and 15% of total imports, respectively. Italy (563K tonnes) took a 8% share (based on tonnes) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (6%). The following importers - Belgium (272K tonnes), Spain (250K tonnes), France (202K tonnes), the Netherlands (180K tonnes), Russia (165K tonnes), the UK (161K tonnes), Canada (158K tonnes), and Switzerland (146K tonnes) together made up 22% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Russia (+11.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($4.9B), Germany ($2.8B), and Italy ($1.5B) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, with a combined 45% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Japan, Belgium, Canada, Spain, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK and Russia, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Russia (+14.6% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 10 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Green coffee Import Prices By Country

In 2017, the average import price for coffee (green) amounted to $2,974 per tonne, moving up by 7% against the previous year. In general, it indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2017: the import price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, green coffee import price increased by +2.1% against its level of 2013. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011, when import increased by 47% y-o-y. In that year, average import price for green coffee attained its maximum level of $4,188 per tonne. From 2012 to 2017, growth of average import price for green coffee failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination; the country with the highest import price was Canada ($4,480 per tonne), while Germany ($2,697 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by Canada (+5.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
