Motel Variation Reno: Biggest Little City, digital art in light box by Ann Tracy

Motel Variation Reno: Biggest Little City, digital art in light box by Ann Tracy

"Greetings From Nada Motel", an art exhibition celebrating the best of the best from Reno's 2008 art-in-motel rooms event, Nada Motel, continues at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History and Culture, 4505 Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, Nevada 89154 until April 20th, 2009. The art on display runs the gamut from digital photography and mixed media work to painting to assemblage to sculpture to video created by the 23 artists who freelance curator and Nada Motel mastermind Chad Sorg chose to participate in this year’s show. Regular museum hours are Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4:45 pm and on Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. For more information call the Barrick Museum at (702) 895-3381 or Sorg at (775) 287-9559

"Greetings" is the follow-up to 2008's "Selections From Dada Motel" exhibition, which was also curated by Sorg at the Barrick Museum. Both exhibitions reflect the odd mix of aesthetics that the motel event has inspired. There is no selection committee or jury deciding which artists will fill motel rooms, it's first come first served and Sorg's "Greetings" mirrors that tenet of eclectic juxtapositions.

Artists in this exhibit include: Trelaine Lewis, Kai Prescher, Ned Peterson, Dianna Sion Callender, Stephanie Hogen, Dusty Hartman, Dean Burton, Franz Szony, John Molezzo, SK James, Ann Tracy, Dave Cherry, Craig Smyres, Elaine Jason, Elaine Parks, Jeff Johnson, Andy Munz, Jerry Tarner, Patty Atcheson Melton, Adam Robbins, Thomas Willis, Leah Craig, and Chad Sorg.

This DIY artists' movement began in 2007 when six artists joined forces in Reno, not so much to be radical–as the artists from their Dada namesake would have had it–but simply to create an opportunity to exhibit their work and to offer the same to others. The artist/organizers worked with the management of historic Hotel El Cortez in downtown Reno and artists flocked to the event to rent their own rooms and open their doors to the public–over 1200 people came to that first year's event! The number of artists involved during the course of the first 3 years has risen from 6 to 150. NadaDada adherents are from the disciplines of visual art, music, poetry, performance.

Reno's NadaDada Motel is scheduled for June 18th to the 21st, 2009 at Hotel El Cortez and the Town House Motorlodge, possibly including additional motels as well. 100 artists are expected to participate in the upcoming Reno art-in-motels event.
