Marstel-Day Selected for Telework!VA Program

Press release from: Marstel-Day, LLC

Fredericksburg VA: Rebecca R. Rubin, President of Virginia-based environmental firm Marstel-Day, LLC announced today that her company will be participating in the Telework!VA program, a public/private partnership serving Virginia businesses and dedicated to improving those businesses’ bottom lines through telework while reducing traffic congestion.

Ms. Rubin said, “I realized how powerful an incentive teleworking was back in 2003 when I first hired Fredericksburg-based employees and was able to offer them jobs that, because of teleworking, did not involve a 100-mile round trip commute to the metropolitan DC area. Taking them off the road for two plus hours per day was in some ways more of an incentive to these new employees than anything else I could have offered; it was just as important to them as salary and more so than some of their benefits,” she said.

Since 2003, the company has utilized a flexible model of teleworking based on the use of laptops with embedded wireless cards, Blackberries, and incentives such as rail passes/smart cards for commuting employees in the metropolitan DC area. According to Ms. Rubin, the company will focus its next-stage efforts on the use of Video Teleconferencing (VTC) equipment to link its employees in its Fredericksburg and Alexandria, VA offices. “From the company’s creation in 2002, Marstel-Day has always been committed to getting cars off the road, by reducing both the number of trips made by car as well as the total miles travelled,” said Rubin. “But the difference now is that we don’t have to go it alone – the funding we are receiving from Telework!VA will allow us to increase the frequency with which we telework by utilizing technology that makes face-to-face interaction from a distance both easy and productive. We’ll be able to meet remotely with each other and with our clients, which will enable us to work more efficiently, reduce travel costs, and meet our mission as an environmentally-aware business that reduces its impact on natural resources through smart business strategies.”

Telework!VA is a partnership program of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation. Detailed information on Telework!VA can be found at www.teleworkva.org.
