Refurbishing contactors is just one of the railway maintenance tasks Rowe Hankins will undertake for Bombardier Transportation.

Refurbishing contactors is just one of the railway maintenance tasks Rowe Hankins will undertake for Bombardier Transportation.

A two-year framework agreement between the global rail leaders Bombardier Transportation and rail systems supplier Rowe Hankins has been signed. This formalises co-operation on maintenance, refurbishment and renewal of critical train safety and operational systems in the UK. In addition to new equipment supply, the agreement covers planned and other essential maintenance of specialised electro mechanical devices, such as circuit breakers, contactors, OTMR’s and Earth leakage detectors on the UK fleet of Bombardier rolling stock.

“We have had a long association with Bombardier covering many projects where we have been both a supplier of product and support engineering services,” explained Tim Allard of Rowe Hankins. “The framework agreement recognises the value of this relationship and makes us part of the extended team at Bombardier, working with them to help operators of both main line rail and urban transit systems to maintain and improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of the UK rail fleet.”

Under the agreement Rowe Hankins will provide services at three levels. For new rolling stock they will be a designated supplier for systems such as circuit breakers, speed monitors, OTMR’s, and so on. On existing rolling stock they will monitor and maintain these systems, providing in-service upgrade as required. The company will also provide a workshop service to re-engineer electro mechanical devices such as contactors and circuit breakers to restore performance and extend their service life.

Working with rolling stock builders, train operating companies, track owners and infrastructure contractors, Rowe Hankins provides innovative on-train and trackside electro-mechanical equipment for safer and more efficient operations.

The Rowe Hankins’ pioneering intelligent wheel flange lubrication system – iWFL – saves energy, reduces wheel and track wear, increases track and rolling stock uptime and minimises noise and environmental impact. Their Hall-effect speed sensing devices provide accurate measurement of speed and distance and roll back protection, with high reliability and minimal maintenance. Earth leakage detection systems warn of failing insulation so that timely replacement can be made.
