Wheel Flange Lubrication Trials - World Preview at the New Long Marston Rail Industry Testing Circuit
Over 200 rail professionals are expected to attend half-day live trials of Rowe Hankins’ Intelligent Wheel Flange Lubrication System (IWFLS) at a new testing facility in Long Marston – June 7-8. Visitors can choose which sessions suit their needs over the two day event. Representatives of Network Rail, train operating companies, and rolling stock owners will be present in addition to rail and technical media. The event is a world preview for IWFLS, a system that combines memory and global positioning systems (GPS) to deliver a precise pulse of environmentally safe lubricant as the train enters a critical bend.
Downtime due to damage to wheel sets and rail as trains negotiate bends is an issue that affects the whole industry. The noise generated by wheel contact with the track edge is also a matter for public concern. The IWFLS actively reduces track damage and reduces service and repair demands while noise reduction contributes to improved relations with neighbouring communities.
The three mile trial circuit at Long Marston, near Stratford-on-Avon, has two pronounced bends. The former Ministry of Defence facility has just been transferred to a consortium, in which Rowe Hankins in involved. The consortium plans to transform the circuit into a world-class facility for testing rail and light transit vehicles and technology.
For the trial, Rowe Hankins have fitted the IWFLS to a TA Class 117 DMU. After an initial presentation and safety briefing, visitors will travel two circuits of the track to demonstrate noise levels without and with lubrication applied by the IWFLS. There will also be time to see workshops and other facilities on site and see development proposals.
