Graduating from BITS Pilani which is one among the top ranking universities in India today, Dr DP Kothari who is recipient of Most Active Researcher Award winner and presently Vice Chancellor of VIT University Vellore in Tamilnadu has Published 525 research papers in various national as well as international journals and conferences, guided 27 PhDs, 55 M.Techs', authored 20 books in Power Systems and other allied areas. His fields of specialization include Optimal Hydro-thermal Scheduling, Unit Commitment, Maintenance Scheduling, Energy Conservation (loss minimization and voltage control), and Power Quality and Energy Systems Planning and Modelling.

Prior to his assuming charge as Vice Chancellor of VIT University, he was the Professor of Centre for Energy Studies, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. He also served as Director Incharge and Deputy Director (Administration) as well as Head Centre for Energy Studies at Indian Institute of Technology - IIT, Delhi, Principal, Visvesvaryaya Regional Engineering College, Nagpur. Prof. Kothari was Visiting Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia in 1982-83 and 1989 for two years. He was NSF Fellow at Purdue University, U.S. in 1992.

He has delivered several keynote addresses and invited lectures abroad. Prof. Kothari has visited and delivered many invited talks, keynote addresses at both national and international conferences on Electric Energy Systems. Prof. Kothari is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE), Indian National Academy of Sciences [FNASc], Institution of Engineers (FIE) and senior member, IEEE.

Prof. Kothari is the recipient of National Khosla Lifetime achievement Award [2005] from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, National Award for Science and Technology (2001) and Eminent Engineering Personality from the Institution of Engineers (2001).

Prof. Dr. D.P. Kothari, obtained in 1967 his B.E (Electrical), in 1969 M.E. (Power Systems) and in 1975 PhD from the Birla Institute of Technology & Science -BITS Pilani Rajasthan. From 1969 to 1977, he was involved in teaching and research at BITS Pilani. On 15 November 2008, Prof DP Kothari visited his alma mater BITS Pilani as examiner for the doctoral thesis of Mr Manoj S Soni who had carried out research in the area of Energy Management.

During his recent visit, Prof Kothari who has cherished memories of his student years and teaching years at Pilani renewed his bond with his alma mater.
