Blind spot detector systems (BSM) use sensors and cameras to detect vehicles in neighboring lanes that may not be observed by the driver directly. The blind spot detection system alerts the driver about the presence of another vehicle that may be present and to use caution if planning a lane change. Every year, new passenger vehicles are produced with innovative electronic and mechanical features installed to increase safety and drivability. This system warns the driver of the approaching vehicle to help assist in changing lane safely. A small number of these systems are also equipped to interfere by applying brakes and guiding the vehicle back into the clear lane if the warnings are ignored. Automotive blind spot detection systems are highly effective when the equipped vehicle is being passed, passing, or preparing to make a lane adjustment. Some systems sound a warning when the blind spot detection sensors detect that one or more automobiles have entered the driver's two rear blind zones.

Two main types of sensors are used for blind spot detection. They are computer and radar vision. These two systems use sensors to detect the presence of other vehicles in the equipped vehicle’s blind zones. The blind spot detection system processes the information from the sensors and delivers it to the driver in the form of audible and visible indicators. Visual indicators are generally integrated into the glasses on the vehicle’s left and right side and rear view mirror.

Radar based blind spot detection systems generally use sensors mounted on the vehicle’s sides. The sensors receive and transmit radio waves from the vehicle’s sides. The computer present in the vehicle processes the radar signals and provides audible and visual information to the driver. Rain, dirt, snow, and fog can disrupt the radar signals; thus, it can malfunction in extreme weather conditions. Computer vision based blind spot detection systems use digital camera imaging technologies to sense the presence of vehicles and objects in blind zones. Cameras attached on the vehicle’s side’s captures images which are then processed by the computer using algorithms to identify characteristics associated with vehicles.

Additionally some of the vehicles have further options, such as a blind spot intervention system. This system, along with alerting the driver when there is a vehicle on the blind spot, also provides resistance to the steering wheel if the driver attempts to ignore the system’s warning. This type of system can typically be overridden if it malfunctions.
