Edward Mapplethorpe: first solo exhibition in Germany

Berlin, 01 Oktober 2008 (kk) - For a long time Edward Mapplethorpe was overshadowed by his famous brother, Robert. For Robert’s sake, Edward even changed his name and called himself Edward Maxey, using his mother’s maiden name. Now, nearly twenty years after his brother’s death, Edward has had an international breakthrough with his own art - and under his real name.

In a joint collaboration, Galerie artMbassy and Ketterer Kunst are respectively exhibiting Edward Mapplethorpe's Times Zones and Time Lines in October and November 2008 in Berlin.

“I am extremely pleased that we, jointly with Galerie artMbassy, will be presenting new work by Edward Mapplethorpe for the first time in Germany,” thus Robert Ketterer, owner of Ketterer Kunst. “What is so special about these exhibits is that, although they borrow strongly from painting, they were made entirely in the darkroom, but without cameras.”

In Time Zones, Mapplethorpe explores the Zone System of photographic theory. It is a system whereby nine zones are defined as making up the complete tonal spectrum of traditional black-and-white photography ranging from solid black to pure white. The exhibition presents the nine pristine film negatives (20.32 x 25.4 cm) with their corresponding gelatin silver prints (127 x 152.4 cm).

Time Lines is an exploration of line and form. Here, Edward Mapplethorpe combines the spontaneous gesture of Action Painting with the mechanical processes of photography. In addition, the artist's use of hair as a material enables him to play with the dichotomy of control and chance while representing a symbol of revolution. The result is a spiritual and organic balance between chaos and order.

On 17 October Edward Mapplethorpe will be present in person at the vernissage hosted jointly by artMbassy and Ketterer Kunst at Anna-Louisa-Karsch Strasse 7 in Berlin from 6 pm.

On 18 October there will be an artist talk where Edward Mapplethorpe will be available to talk about his work at Ketterer Kunst, Fasanenstrasse 70 in Berlin, from 6 pm.
