Akshaya Patra Foundation Feeds Flood Victims at Yamuna Pusta
The Akshaya Patra Foundation, the world’s largest NGO run school meal program which currently feeds over 9.48 lakh children across the country every day, has come forward in a large way to help the flood hit people of Yamuna Pusta and nearby areas by feeding them with cooked meals since Saturday, Sptember 26, 2008.The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a not-for-profit, Bangalore-based secular trust, evolved a free lunch program in schools in the year 2000. What started as a pilot project in five schools in Bangalore, feeding 1,500 children, has now grown into a mammoth endeavor reaching out to over 9.48 lakh children in over 4,700 government, government aided schools and anganwadis (day care centers) in 15 locations, across Five states in India, day after day. Currently the Foundation reaches to the underprivileged children in Bangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Bellary, Mangalore and Mysore in Karnataka, Jaipur, Nathdwara and Baran in Rajasthan, Vrindavan and Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh, Puri and Nayagarh in Orissa, Gandhinagar and Ahemedabad in Gujarat and Raipur in Chattisgarh.
As the foundation continued to feed the underprivileged children, it also extended a helping hand to the flood affected victims of Yamuna Pusta. As the water released from Haryana created havoc across the city Akshaya Patra Foundation took upon itself the challenge to be with the people at the time of disaster and need. These are the people who come from various sections of the society in search of livelihood and they shelter besides Yamuna Pusta and earn their earnings by planting vegetables in nearby area and sell it in the road side.they lost everything following Flood and became homeless and without food. Akshaya Patra came to their rescue.
The Foundation is currently providing unlimited cooked meals to over 550 people at two centers. The first place is near the Akshardham Temple and the second place is about 500 mtrs ahead towards Yamuna Bridge.
The Akshaya Patra foundation currently serves only rice and dal with vegetables is being fead, but efforts are being made to give roti as well and also to feed more people.
Shri. Madhu Pandit Dasa Chairman, The Akshaya Patra Foundation said, “We are very happy to be of help to these flood victim people. They are very poor people who used to live on daily earning basis and now they have lost everything and it is our duty to help these needy.” He further informed that The Akshaya Patra Foundation would feed these people till they get back to their homes.
