The Wiedmann Bible in VR

The Wiedmann Bible in VR

Becoming a part of the Garden of Eden or attending the Last Supper. At the German Protestant Kirchentag in Berlin the Wiedmann Bible shows visitors a way how to experience the Holy Scriptures in a completely new way.

It depicts the complete Old and New Testament solely through images - 3,333 to be precisely. This makes the Wiedmann Bible not only unique but also opens opportunities for a new access through multimedia such as a virtual reality which will be introduced to the public at the German Protestant Kirchentag (May 25th - 27th) in Berlin. The first version shows 8 rooms with selected Biblical Stories through visitors can walk as if they entered a museum. The interactive Bible experience is a kiosk reproducing the artist’s attic where the Wiedmann Bible was created. Here the user can scroll through all 19 books.

As the original Wiedmann Bible is hand-painted the almost one mile long bible had to be scanned and digitalised after its revelation four years ago. Until then it was hidden in the attic of the German artist Willy Wiedmann for decades. Although he always wanted for his Bible to become accessible for all people around the world certain technologies were not readily available and he was not able to publish it during his lifetime. It therefore slipped into obscurity until his son revealed the artwork in 2013. Since then Martin Wiedmann and his family have taken on the mission to engage people worldwide with the Bible through a new multimedia experience.

About the Wiedmann Bible:
The Wiedmann Bible is the only one known Illustrated Bible so far depicting the complete Old and New Testament in 3,333 illustrations. Willy Wiedmann worked for 16 years (1984–2000) on illustrating The Bible. It is bound in a concertina folder with a total length of approximately 1 mile. Wiedmann created the Bible in his Polycon Painting Style. Blended picture sequences illustrating the Bible stories consecutively. His intention was to encourage the reader to actively occupy oneself with the Bible again by simplifying it. It is available as App and eBook in German, English, and Spanish. In December the Wiedmann Bible will be published for the first time as a book in two volumes as a limited ART-Edition, containing a total of 1,740 pages. The 3,333 images are complemented by the artist’s comments on his work as well as Bible verses from the latest Martin Luther Bible translation 2017 from the German Bible Society in German.
