Breathe Easy: Five Tips to Help Control Your Asthma

05-19-2017 08:58 AM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: Envolve

In honor of National Asthma Awareness Month, the health experts at Envolve, an integrated healthcare solutions company, are pleased to share five tips to help you manage your asthma symptoms and experience a breath of relief.

1. Create an Action Plan. By creating a specific asthma action plan with your primary care provider (PCP), you’ll feel better prepared when your asthma starts acting up. Whether it’s guidance on how to take your medicine, how to avoid your triggers, or when to reach out for help, you’ll have tools to manage your symptoms at your fingertips. If you experience an asthma attack, go back and review your plan to understand which factor caused your symptoms to worsen.

2. Tame Your Triggers. Triggers are allergens or conditions that aggravate symptoms and can vary from person to person. Consult with your healthcare provider to learn how to identify and reduce your exposure to these triggers which can range from mold to pet dander to household cleaners. Take note of changes in your environment like shifts in weather, temperature or humidity, and write down how they affect you. Doing so helps you easily identify which seasons agitate your asthma the most so you can limit outdoor activities – and difficulty breathing – in the future.

3. Keep Moving. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important for everyone, including those with asthma. Doing any type of physical activity that helps strengthen your lungs can reduce the risk of an oncoming attack and enhance your quality of life. To make the most of your workout, make sure to perform warm-up exercises before increasing your intensity. When its cold out, take precautions and wear a face mask to warm the air that you breathe in. If it’s extremely cold or hot, or it’s a season that irritates your asthma, choose an indoor activity instead of heading outdoors. As with any exercise program, check with your healthcare provider before starting.

4. Manage Medications. Because people react to medications differently, you may need to try a few types to find what works best to control your asthma. When you experience symptoms or an asthma attack, the sooner you treat it, the less severe it will be and the less medication you’ll need.

5. Breathe Better. It’s important to pay attention to your breathing and watch for signs of an oncoming attack, such as wheezing or shortness of breath. When you’re experiencing asthma symptoms, incorporating breathing exercises can help you remain calm and in control. There are many breathing techniques to help combat an attack. Talk with your healthcare provider about options to learn what may work best for you.
