Fourth viennaartweek draws art scene experts to Vienna from November 17-23

Focus on Austrian and international art scene

During the viennaartweek from November 17 to 23, Vienna becomes a meeting point for international art insiders and interested public alike. Experts such as Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans-Ulrich Obrist from Serpentine Gallery in London, designer Alfredo Häberli from Switzerland or Sir Norman Rosenthal, former employee at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, discuss – amongst other topics - the future of the museum and the connection of art and design market in top-class panels.

Daily at 7pm, Artist Talks at the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK, Museum of Modern Art Vienna) offer insight into concepts of sculptural work. They are provided by Helmut Draxler, Rachel Harrison, John Miller, Paulina Olowska or Franz West and others. Additionally, exclusive Studio Visits show artists in their work environment, for example Dorothee Golz, Peter Kogler, Sonja Gangl or Alois Mosbacher.

In the fourth year of its existence, viennaartweek focusses on artistic interventions: Kunst im öffentlichen Raum (KÖR, Public Art Vienna) supplies a guided tour to projects such as Ingeborg Strobl’s „ein Garten (zum Beispiel)“ (“a garden (for example)”), Flora Neuwirth’s „clubblumen“ (“clubflowers”) or Heinz Gappmayr’s „Raumtexte“ (“room texts”). Performances named „Speak and Spell“ in cooperation with spike art quarterly bring musician-blogger Momus, word acrobat Tris Vonna-Michell and computer musician Florian Hecker to Vienna.

The art festival attracts international notice to the Viennese art scene. As important part of a vivid art world, artists are at its core. In this context, the two training schools Academy of Fine Arts and University of Applied Arts Vienna cover the concurrence of art and knowledge as well as artistic educational policy.

Robert Punkenhofer, artistic director of viennaartweek, is especially pleased about the involvement of galleries: “With Gallery Nights and the Gallery Breakfast these important platforms of the Viennese art scene are prominently accentuated. Therefore, we savour their internationally acknowledged networking and ambassador skills.”

The participating institutions have developed numerous independent programme points, amongst others, exhibition openings for the viennaartweek. On display are
„Sharon Lockhart“ at the Secession and „Amar Kanwar: The Torn First Pages“ at Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary as well as three exhibitions of students’ works at the Academy of Fine Arts.

Art Cluster Vienna is the organisation behind the art festival. President Martin Böhm underlines the importance of private sponsors that render viennaartweek a unique event in Europe: “By collaborating intensely with our partners and sponsors - Wiener Städtische Versicherung/Vienna Insurance Group, departure wirtschaft, kunst und kultur gmbh as well as Vienna Economic Chamber we were able to secure a convincing programme once again.”
